With such an uncertain top 5, it seemed as if many people were eager to crown a group of more worthy players. Despite possessing an apparent valiant work-ethic and strong lower-body, his success in both the Finnish Liiga and the KHL have not translated to North America. His value peaked the following year, and has since stumbled. On the other hand, Lucas Elvenes has quietly been climbing to the point where he currently leads AHL rookies in scoring. As I mentioned above, I still think Lias Andersson is worthy of a first round pick, although just barely.
He should feast on weak matchups as a second-line center this year. In his final year of junior, he carried the Guelph Storm to the Memorial Cup with 42 points in 24 playoff games. In the NHL, he has continued to produce at an impressive rate and has shown he can run a powerplay.
Some have given up on him, but if he remains healthy he can still reach his potential. His frame means he can win pick battles and maintain possession, and his quick hands and creativity mean he can create chances. He is just as good as a setup man or a finisher. If he can round out his game and start to make the simple plays more consistently, he may end up higher on this list.
However, the players above him have been more effective thus far. Standing at six-foot-three, 200 pounds, he is most effective below the hash marks where he can dictate play with his size, shot and vision. He also possesses a powerful release, making him a well-rounded threat. This season we will see whether or not Vilardi can fully recover from the injuries that have plagued his career thus far.
He plays a simple but highly effective game, using his slick hands to carry the puck into vantage points where he can beat the goalie himself with or find a teammate with ease. He is a safe bet to be a second-line center, having produced well but not extraordinarily at all levels. He is lethal in the offensive zone, hard to get off the puck and is an elite passer. Similar to Patrick and Vilardi, Glass is another big, talented Canadian centreman whose future is hard to project given his injury history.
However, he has shown improvement at the pro level and he is too talented not to make the NHL. When the opposition inevitably closes in on him, he can also make space for himself with his creativity. He is a fluid skater, so he generates a lot of offense on the rush and he is effective on the powerplay. Despite having the fourth-most games played out of this class, the upside of the players above him is higher.

That entire organization is trending in the wrong direction in a major way. I could see a scenario in which he nearly doubles those total next season.
They took Glass with that pick and ended up taking Suzuki with their second pick, 13th overall. Suzuki was traded to Montreal in the Max Pacioretty deal before ever playing for the team. He went on to post 41 points in 71 games in his rookie season with the Habs. They also acquired Tony DeAngelo in that deal. This was before the Rangers committed to their rebuild and they thought Andersson could step in and play right away. Thomas is an excellent depth option who will be pushed up the lineup in St. Louis sooner rather than later.
His lack of production up to this point is highly, highly concerning considering how much natural ability he has. He finally appeared to be up to full speed at the end of the year but remains a massive injury risk moving forward.
