Lucky Sometimes, you just need things to go your way. The Lucky feat gives you the ability to influence luck three times per day. You can reroll a d20 roll you dislike, potentially turning a crucial failure into a success. As a Healing Wizard, ensuring your spells hit or your defenses hold at a critical moment can make all the difference. Inspiring Leader While this feat requires a decent Charisma score, it can be a fantastic choice for a Healing Wizard focused on prevention. It allows you to inspire your allies, giving them temporary hit points equal to your level plus your Charisma modifier. Given enough downtime, this can act as a reliable buffer of hit points for your party.
These suggestions provide a solid starting point from which to consider your options. It can delay your access to higher-level spells and class features, so it should be carefully considered and not just taken on a whim. For a Healing Wizard, there are a couple of classes worth considering for multiclassing. Even with just a one-level dip, you gain access to healing spells like Cure Wounds and Healing Word, which can be quite handy for emergency situations. The Life Domain can provide further enhancements to your healing spells. Bard Bards are versatile spellcasters with a list of supportive spells. Additionally, you get access to healing spells like Cure Wounds and lesser restoration. Bear in mind, Bard spells use Charisma as their casting ability, so consider your Charisma score before choosing this option. Druid A one-level dip into Druid can give you access to a variety of healing spells like Cure Wounds and Healing Word. However, the most significant advantage comes from the spell Goodberry.
Each casting creates 10 berries that can heal 1 HP each. They last 24 hours, providing an efficient and resource-effective healing option throughout the day. Again, Druid spells are Wisdom-based, so a decent Wisdom score is needed for this multiclassing choice. While multiclassing can provide new options and versatility, it does come at the cost of delaying your Wizard progression. A well-crafted backstory gives your Healing Wizard depth, adding richness to your role-playing interactions and providing your Dungeon Master with narrative hooks for the campaign. Were they born with an innate talent, or did they stumble upon an ancient tome of knowledge? Perhaps they were mentored by an older wizard, or they honed their skills at a magical academy. Motivation for Healing Why did your character decide to focus on healing and support magic? Did they witness a tragedy they were powerless to prevent, sparking a desire to protect others? Maybe they were touched by the suffering of those around them and vowed to alleviate it.
School of Magic Why did your character choose their specific school of magic? Was it aligned with their healing aspirations, or was there another reason behind it? Adventuring Life Finally, why did your character choose the adventuring life? Are they searching for arcane knowledge, seeking to test their abilities, or hoping to make a difference in the world? Understanding why your character decided to leave their previous life for the uncertainty and danger of adventuring can add depth and intrigue to their story.
You take advantage of their hesitation to strike back, knowing that you have the upper hand thanks to your quick thinking and skill with magic. With a juried warding gesture and muttered words in a dead language, a barrier of brilliant blue force erupted between the two combatants. The claws bounced off its rigid surface with a hollow thud, as the Wizard stood and composed himself.
With claws raking the magical defense, struggling to find purchase, the Wizard made different gestures this time and with the glint of a fiery ember in his eyes, immolated his foe. DnD 5E Class Guides.
You can use your action to move your illusory double up to twice your speed and make it gesture, speak, and behave in whatever way you choose. You can see through its eyes and hear through its ears as if you were located where it is. On each of your turns as a bonus action, you can switch from using its senses to using your own, or back again.

As previously mentioned, casting something like Resurrection without expending the material components is just as attractive as being able to cast it as a wizard in the first place. Clone PHB Clone comes in at the next-highest total cost of 3,000 gp. This is where things start to get weird. The spell simply takes effect. Clone is an important option because it makes you functionally immortal. Either wait to die of natural causes or of adventuring-related causes , or if you get impatient and want a younger body you can always leave your gear at home and teleport somewhere that will be instantly lethal like the sun. If you just want servants, there are better options. Take a couple weeks when you first learn Wish to: Have your entire party become resistant to all damage one type per casting. Summon enormous piles of money and crash every economy you come across 25,000gp at a time.
But for the rest, it is an incredibly accurate tool with beautiful spell illustrations. If there were an easier way to contact the developer, I would be happy to provide him with info on any further errors I come across so that they can be fixed, turning this into a truly perfect app. Developer Response , Dear Mikey, thanks for leaving us such a wonderful review. Please reach out to info fumblerolls. Again, thank you! I had canceled my subscription, but then renewed it. I just depend on this too much. That seemed silly to me since I have all of the books and DND Beyond sources as well, but… this just works better. I cannot thank you all enough for making this app.
It also gives knowledge of languages and insight into the mind. Each of these spells works differently, but all of them give the caster knowledge magical knowledge they did not previously possess. Detect thoughts, for example, allows the mage to read surface-level thoughts of a target or even delve a little deeper if the target fails their saving throw. Identify is a spell that reveals the exact nature and use of magical objects. Great for avoiding cursed items! Finally, clairvoyance creates an invisible sensor that can either see or hear whatever is around it as if you were in the location yourself. If the target fails its wisdom saving throw, it takes 3d8 psychic damage more at higher levels. In addition, for the duration of the spell, the caster always knows the location of the target so long as they remain on the same plane of existence. The target cannot hide from the mage or turn invisible. Communing with things: Many of the spells on the School of Divination list allow you to gain knowledge by communing with other forces or beings. These are spells such as speak with animals, beast bond, augury, commune, and commune with nature. Do your players need a map, but keep forgetting to pick on up in town? Both speak with animals and beast bond allow the caster to connect with animals either verbally or mentally, and communicate with them in their respective ways. Beast bond only allows for the transference of simple concepts and emotions, though it does give the animal advantage on attacks within 5 feet of you. Augury is an example of spells that contact higher beings for insight on future plans. In the case of augury, the mage uses some sort of divination tool, such as jeweled rods or tarot cards, to receive an omen of good or bad fortune. Curse of Strahd uses fortune telling and card readings really well! Check out my guide to use in your game! Interested in how to use this kind of divination in a game? Curse of Strahd is a great example! Check out my article of Card Readings in Curse of Strahd and use it as a guideline for creating fortunes in your own game! There are other spells like augury, such as commune, which create a direct link between the caster and their deity for more specific input. Not only does it reveal the topography, it also tells you what is on the land, such as people, fey, fiends, and notable resources. Getting Insight on things: The last notable subset of the School of Divination can be described as spells that give insight. These are spells like guidance, true strike, and gift of alacrity. This school of magic is like a guidepost pointing the way to advantage and knowledge. Guidance and true strike are both cantrips that give the target of the spell an advantage over their circumstance or enemies. The willing creature affected by this spell can add 1d4 to an ability check of their choice. Because of the name of the spell and the school of magic it is categorized as I like to think of this effect as the result of divine insight imparted by the magic. Want to gain the upper hand in combat? Knowing what your enemies will do before they do it is a great way! As for gift of alacrity, this might seem like an odd spell to place under this category. All it does is grant a willing creature an extra 1d8 to their initiative roll. But because initiative is how fast one responds to danger, I would argue that the effect of this spell is some sort of divine insight that allows the target of the spell to react faster than normal. Some of them are items that literally cast divination spells, while others just follow the rules of divination magic by revealing information. Here are a few of my favorites. Medallion of Thoughts wondrous item, uncommon : Creepy aesthetic, but super useful! The Medallion of Thought is an item that simply casts one of the spells from the School of Divination. It carries with it three charges of detect thoughts, and regains 1d3 expended charges at dawn. It adds a new level to that aspect of the game that they could really dig into. Lantern of Revealing wondrous item, uncommon : A must have if you are dealing with tricky fey creatures! The Lantern of Revealing is a hooded lantern that can burn for six hours. It sheds 30 feet of bright light which reveals all invisible creatures or objects. This item would be a great gift to your players if you are planning to send them on fey adventures, as many of the fey creatures are able to turn invisible.

The Crystal Ball and all of its variants are obviously extremely powerful magic items. I would be very cautious about giving it to players, and would perhaps be more prone to lend it or allow them to pay an NPC for the services of one. If you do want to allow one to fall into the hands of your players, bear in mind that these are very high level spells that the ball can cast. I would save it as a reward for late-game, high level players who are facing incredibly tough challenges. Describing Divination Magic in Your World Since Divination magic is mostly invisible magic, it can be more difficult to describe the way this magic appears in your world. Divination magic provides a brief glimpse into the Weave…what would happen if players looked for too long? Sight: As quoted above, those who use divination magic have the ability to glimpse the Weave.
Imagine that your players have used detect magic on an interesting ring they have just found. They are delighted to discover that it is, indeed, a magic ring, and they naturally want to know what school of magic is associated with it. But that could be disappointing to the wizard who wants to know more about this cool magic item they just found. Auras of magic are a great way to describe magic items without giving away too much information or having to pick a school of magic! Perhaps you can describe how the threads of the Weave are pulled into the gem of the ring and pulse out in shimmering waves, like heat waves in the desert. Or, perhaps you see the Weave twisting around the ring and emanating as a protective shield, repelling the cool air away from the item or attuned user.
If that seems like too much detail to give the players unless they cast identify, you can always simplify it. The evocation item just changes the effect of the Weave around it, whereas the abjuration item forms a barrier. Feels abjuration-y. So much of the way we learn and process information comes from what we hear. There is more to the sound of the School of Divination than just the silly voices we create whenever our druid casts speak with animals. Consider describing the sensation of a player casting clairvoyance.
Seriously though, I believe every DM has a squirrel voice They are suddenly being able to hear in another room as if they stood there themselves. Or, in a less serious game, maybe the whole dial-up internet spiel. From the ethereal whispers of the otherworldly murmuring knowledge into your mind to the way a comprehended language manifests to the ear of those under the influence of the Weave, there are countless creative ways to describe the sound of this invisible magic! Smell: Scent is another great way to describe divination magic. Few things trigger memories or emotions like the sense of smell. A room might reek of rot or brimstone when a fiend or undead is nearby.
Or, the pleasant scent of nutmeg and spice could accompany the presence of a fey. Just like Detect Evil and Good, I also use scent to describe the different types of poison or disease a creature is suffering from. Depending on the effects, I flavor the scent to give as much helpful information as I can. A feverish disease will smell acidic, a wasting disease will smell like decay, etc. Some poisons come from certain creatures, like the toxins of a vibrant colored frog from the jungles. In those case, I would tell the player the recognize the scent of the exoctic flowers and know that this toxin came from that specific type of creature.
Humans have more than just 5 senses. Be sure to use the other senses too! Like the sense of time, balance, spritiual attunement and equibrium! While these senses are different from the traditional way we describe the sense of touch, they might still translate into touchy-feely adjectives. This spell gives information about the lay of the land. In this spell alone, you could lend your description to all five senses.
The smell of fresh water, the sound of marching enemies. You could describe the sight of it all as though the player were having an out of body experience. But for me, the real gem of this spell is describing the way the land feels. The caster becomes one with nature, according to the spell description. This leaves it open to rich interpretation. Instead of feeling their own flesh and blood, the player is suddenly engulfed in the sense of being made from stone and earth.
Becoming one with nature can be both a fullfilling and terrifying experience.
Notably, Stunning, Insanity, and Hopelessness are the staple choices, targeting Wisdom, Intelligence, and Charisma respectively. This lets you keep the effect or multiple of it around for as long as you want until it is triggered.
If you have an entire year of downtime and you have 9th level spells, you basically have won the game anyway, but these options are quite cute and can be an inspiration for worldbuilding. In Combat During adventuring, or in combat, your priorities are different to when you are not. As with the previous section, these are spells that will typically be better in combat than outside of it, but feel free to play around with them during downtime or as a rest cast option.
For the first, you can force creatures to make a save for frightened, without a repeated save. If they get 60 feet away, or lose sight of the target, it ends, but they are once again frightened if they can see it or get close enough again. The other use forces creatures to clump up and makes them unable to move away, which should allow you and your party to set up and place areas of effect perfectly.
While out of combat, you can instead place the effect on an object to carry it around, since the spell lasts for 10 whole days. Dark star Dark star is a spell that is normally only accessible to the practitioners of Dunamancy, but through wish almost everything is possible. This spell works nicely as a disruptive area of effect, since the area becomes difficult terrain, it blocks sight and can stop spells from being cast with verbal components.
It has both a huge radius and a far range, and damages anyone inside. Druid grove Druid grove is normally a spell that requires 10 minutes to cast, but with the power of the wish spell, it can be cast as an action, allowing for usage in combat. As the different effects created by druid grove are ignored by any creatures you designate when you cast the spell, you can blanket a battlefield with a host of effects that disrupt your enemies in a massive area of effect up to a 90-foot cube while yourself and your allies can proceed through unimpeded.
The Solid Fog creates one-way heavy obscurement as well as severely reducing the movement of hostile creatures through the area. This is basically a non-friendly fire, non-concentration version of the fan favorites fog cloud, sleet storm, and plant growth you can recognize from our builds. Additionally, if an enemy spellcaster were to try to use dispel magic, they can only dispel one of the effects at a time.
The spell is limited in that it can only be used in outdoor and underground areas, so buildings and other structures are not allowed, but this is not a major concern. Second, while the Solid Fog is very powerful, it only extends up to 10 feet high, making it not as impactful against flying enemies. But even so, this spell is an incredibly useful battlefield control spell that is worthy of wish replication.
Hallow Another spell which can affect a giant area is hallow. It usually has a 24 hour casting time, which wish changes to be usable in combat. An area up to a 60 feet radius is affected.
You also get to choose a second effect, with the big gun options being Energy Protection, Energy Vulnerability, Fear, and even Silence. Resistances are never something to say no to, and the Fear ability makes affected creatures unable to move at all within the area. Energy Vulnerability makes those creatures with tough shells easier to crack, and Silence can situationally be good to shutdown enemy casters.
This spell also allows you to permanently remove enemies using banishment or maze. When banishment and maze end, their target s are returned to the space they left or, if it is occupied, in the nearest unoccupied space. If at that point in time the ability to travel to that spot is no longer available for them, they would be stuck in another plane.
As previously stated, hallow stops certain creatures from entering the area, even through planar travel. Not much else to say than that. It is normally impossible to cast this mid-combat due to its 10 minute casting time, but of course wish changes this.
You can drown the enemies in lava, create mazes, or just make yourself a castle. Forbiddance This spell can totally alter the battlefield. You create a ward of up to 40,000 square feet of floor space with a height of 30 feet.
This ward blocks magical travel into the area, and damages creature types of your choice every time they enter the area for the first time on their turn, or start their turn there. As with hallow, you can permanently remove enemies. This spell usually takes 10 minutes to cast, and requires 1,000 gp worth in materials, so wish is quite the game changer in the way you use this.
This spell affects a cube as small as 5 feet to as large as 100 feet. You get a little bit more control over what exactly this area does than forbiddance, but it can also block magical travel. As with hallow and forbiddance, you can permanently remove enemies.
This spell also usually takes 10 minutes to cast, but wish makes this an action.
Get it on DMs Guild 6. The story follows an ancient gold dragon who enlists the players to help track down a magical musical instrument that was last seen in the depths in a haunted forest.
It features exploration, combat and a unique and surprisingly heart warming plot that really showcases the best of what DnD is all about. Notably, this is part of the Clover Group Series of one shot adventures, which are also fantastic and definitely worth running. Get it on DMs Guild 5.
This adventure is perfect for characters level 1-4 and can be completed in about 3-6 hours, making it one of the best DnD one shots for new players. Along the way there are hilariously bad puns, puzzle solving and some truly amazing set pieces. Get it on DMs Guild 4.
Curtain Call: A Sharn Adventure Co-written by noted gamer designer Keith Baker , this one shot is a perfect introduction to the Eberron campaign setting and is designed for characters of 1st to 4th level.
What do some of these spells even do? Limitations: Rogue Aside from magical items, feats, and racial bonuses, the rogue does not typically get spells. Minor Illusion — Create an illusory image or sound. There are so many possibilities that we wrote an article about it here — Clever Cantrip Uses: Minor Illusion Booming Blade: Make a melee attack and inflict the enemy with lightning. If the enemy moves, they immediately take 1d8 thunder damage, which increases as you level. Green Flame Blade: Make a melee attack that creates a flame, leaping to any other opposing enemies within 5ft and inflicting damage equal to your spellcasting mod.
