A superb three-ball plant to the right corner bag proves to be the highlight of a disappointingly short run of 10 as he soon overruns the cue ball again and has to retreat to baulk. It enables him to bring the cue ball down to nick in the red above the black and free up the colour on its spot.
He uses deep screw to bounce off the right cushion off a red to middle left to land neatly back on the black and despite a cluster of five reds still tight in a mini pack, he coolly takes care of the stray ones to pass the half century mark. A black down to corner right via the rest pretty much secures the frame with Allen needing a couple of snookers. Higgins splits the pack and retreats to baulk knowing he should be good for a 2-1 lead. He does indeed as a couple of shots later he gets an unfortunate double kiss and leaves that final red on to middle right.
