He was appointed a second lieutenant to the 15th Infantry at Fort Lewis , Washington , in 1939, and remained there until his transfer to the 501st Parachute Infantry Battalion at Fort Benning , Georgia , in 1941. In March 1941, he earned his jump wings. He rapidly advanced through the ranks at Fort Benning as the parachute infantry battalions were expanded to regiments. By June 6, 1944, he was a lieutenant colonel in command of the 3rd Battalion of the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment. D-Day operations edit Cole parachuted into Normandy with his unit as part of the American airborne landings in Normandy. By the evening of June 6, he had gathered 75 men. On the afternoon of June 10, Cole led 400 men of his battalion in single file down a long, exposed causeway, with marshes at either side. A hedgerow behind a large farmhouse on the right was occupied by well dug-in German troops. At the far end of the causeway was the last of four bridges over the Douve River flood plain.
He did the 1972 Summit Series on radio. On TV, there was the 1976 game in Philadelphia when the Soviet Red Army players left the ice in protest at the Flyers take-no-prisoners tactics. He was there for the 2002 Olympic final in Salt Lake City when Canada ended its 50-year Olympic gold-medal drought with a win over the United States in the final. Not to mention a string of Stanley Cup finals. But Cole was more than hockey.
Players, coaches and fans stood in appreciation to honour Cole in the second period as his four children, Christian, Hilary, Megan and Robbie, watched in the gondola at the Bell Centre. Cole, congratulations on 50 great years of hockey. He did 16 games his final season, up from the 10 originally planned. Bob Cole will always remain the soundtrack of hockey. His love for hockey started at a young age.
