Canadiens Reportedly Turned Down Cutter Gauthier Trade
Plenty of time, anyway, for Gauthier to impress the Flyers front office enough to earn an entry-level contract at the end of the year.
There were some distant thoughts about what he could be, and what he might amount to if his progression was absolutely wonderful. It was a bit of a reach based purely on draft year production. It was about the numbers he may put up when he improved his reads and made more efficient hockey decisions. Gauthier never had bad hockey sense, or below average hockey sense. Gauthier was entrusted to be the primary creator of offense for a weak and undermanned BC team. It had nothing to do with playing center as opposed to wing. He had to create opportunities for his teammates. He had to be the primary creator for an NCAA team.
Impressively, he took to the role with nigh immediacy. He ultimately finished with 16 goals and 37 points in 32 games for that Boston College squad who was starving of offensive weapons besides him.
He was able to spend time at home after returning from competing at the World Juniors in Sweden——where Gauthier helped lead Team USA to a gold medal——instead of going right back to Boston College. Nesty was one of the first guys to reach out to me when he saw it. He was super thrilled and so pumped that Anaheim out of all the teams was the spot I landed. National Under-18 Team. Across those three games, Gauthier attempted 51 total passes in the offensive zone, and he completed 76. Of those pass attempts, 15. His accuracy in both high-danger 62.
His high-danger pass completion was especially good, finishing well above the average of 48. Additionally, Gauthier finds soft spots in coverages to open himself up for teammates to set him up in high-danger. He loves going to the net-front and posing a threat there as well, cleaning up rebounds and getting deflections.
Looking at his shot, he has a strong and quick release. Looking at his shooting stats over those tracked games, he fired 23 total shots, with 15 of them hitting the net 65. Of those shots, 39.
It also helps that 88. What do these numbers tell us? These numbers tell us that Cutter Gauthier is a very smart forward that can beat teams in multiple ways, without being predictable.
He does not attack high-danger very often, however, when he does, he is one of the most effective players in this class doing so. Add to the fact that his off-the-puck abilities is also high-end, he is one of the bigger forwards in the class, and he is a very shifty and slippery skater, and you have a player that has immense offensive upside. Gauthier has all the skills, size, and skating a general manager could ask for in a draft, offensively.
That makes him not only a safer option early in the draft, but also a very high upside option as well. But how well does he do with moving the puck up the ice to gain offensive opportunities? That is where some concerns lie, though he certainly has the skills to improve.
When it comes to breaking out of the defensive zone, across those three tracked games, Gauthier cleared the zone with possession on 52. Not to mention, his individual zone exit percentage. In other words the percentage in which Gauthier skated the puck out of the defensive zone himself, successfully.

A lot of it centres around scoring goals and he will be looked at as the main shot on the power play. Just bringing it every single shift. Shift in and shift out. Bringing it every night.

Especially when it comes to shooting the puck. Gauthier currently leads the NTDP team in goals with 30 in 42 games, and has 47 points total. But Gauthier believes that there are deeper levels to his game that he can utilize while on the ice.

The Flyers had high hopes for Gauthier when they drafted him. But, after a season at Boston College and a chat about his future, Gauthier made a surprising decision.

Gauthier uses his long, powerful stride to effectively carry the puck out towards the boards when entering the offensive zone and maneuver his way around defenders to drive the net. When it comes to quickness, Gauthier does have a decent amount of explosiveness. Gauthier plays the role of modern power-forward to a T and excels at using his speed and size to generate space in the offensive zone. Gauthier tends to make goalies pay from multiple angles, but his bread and butter seems to be the left-side circle. He can attack the offensive zone in a myriad of ways, usually combining his larger frame and quick feet to beat a defender out wide, or he can cut into the middle of the ice by stickhandling around the defending forwards and drawing opponents onto his person, allowing his teammates to enter the zone and set up. Over the past couple of seasons, his film has shown he sees the ice very well and is capable to be an effective playmaker.
