Eugene Debs, the Espionage Act, and the Election of 1920
Eugene Debs By 1918, Eugene Debs was a veteran labor activist and a revered figure in the American left of the era. Debs was born in Indiana in 1855. He dropped out of school at the age of 14, and began working for the Vandalia Railroad. Early in life, he was a member of the Democratic Party, and spent time as a member of the Indiana House of Representatives. Debs came of age during a time of intense strife and militancy in American labor. Debs remained employed by the railroad through the end of the 19th century, where he became involved with union organizing and more radical politics.
In 1893, he helped to organize, and was elected as the first president of, the American Railway Union ARU , which waged a successful strike against the Great Northern Railway in 1894. Debs first rose to national prominence later the same year, thanks to his central role in the Pullman Strike. Although Debs initially advised against the walkout—which he viewed as too risky—the ARU ultimately threw its support behind a nationwide boycott, and railroad workers across the nation refused to work on trains containing Pullman cars. The strike was so effective that, between May and June, nationwide rail transport ground to a virtual halt. The economic disruption was so great that, in July, President Grover Cleveland issued an injunction against the work stoppage and called in federal troops to suppress the strike.
Clashes broke out, and federal troops and police killed at least 30 railroad workers while suppressing the strike. Debs was arrested and imprisoned for his role in the action. Supreme Court Library. After his release from prison, Debs was one of the most important figures in the American labor movement at the turn of the century. He was instrumental in founding the Socialist Party of America and was an early founding member of the radical trade union Industrial Workers of the World.

Trump said it was a "dark day" for the U. He noted the charge was "ludicrous. Read more Socialist leader Debs spoke against U. The Sedition Act of 1918, which was repealed in 1920, sought to make anti-war statements treasonous. He also criticized the government for detaining anti-war activists, as per The Washington Post. He was arrested weeks later, and many American newspapers at the time dubbed the socialist a traitor or a dictator. During his trial, Debs said he believes "in free speech, in war as well as in peace.
The strike led Debs to question whether large corporations could be truly committed to either industrial cooperation or popular democracy. He also began to believe that organizing unions along trade or craft lines rather than on an industrial basis made it more difficult for workers to join together in common struggle against the growing power of the corporations. Union officials called for a national boycott of Pullman cars, asking the other railroad unions to honor the boycott by refusing to work on trains pulling the cars. Despite widespread support, when the railroads convinced President Grover Cleveland to send in federal troops to enforce an injunction against interfering with the U.
ARU leaders, including Debs, were arrested on conspiracy charges and were sentenced to six-month jail terms for disregarding the injunction. Running for president himself in 1900, Debs received 96,000 votes and in 1901 merged his party with supporters of the reformist wing of the Socialist Labor Party to form the Socialist Party of America. Debs ran again for president in 1904, polling 400,000 votes. The "Wobblies," as they were known, called on all workers to join "one big union" and seize direct control of industry through mass strikes.
Debs resigned from the IWW in 1908 and ran for president a third time, doing no better than in 1904. In the 1910 and 1912 elections, however, scores of Socialists were victorious in state and local contests, and in 1912 Debs polled nearly 1 million votes for president. Too sick to run a national campaign in 1916, Debs ran for Congress in his home district, finishing a distant second to the victorious Republican.
While in prison, Debs would recieve letters and reading material via mail from across the country.
At the time of his sentencing, he still did not consider himself a socialist, but after reading material written by socialist authors such as Edward Bellamy and Karl Kautsky, he began to learn more and gradually converted to socialism. He was even visited in prison in person by Victor L. Berger , who gave him a copy of Capital by Karl Marx. After being released from prison, Eugene Debs would begin his new career of involvement in explicitly socialist organizations.
Debs convinced fellow ARU members to join forces with the Brotherhood of the Cooperative Commonwealth - a group advocating the creation of socialist intentional communities - to form the political party Social Democracy of America. At the origins of the Socialist Labor Party Plans for socialist colonies advocated by the Brotherhood of the Cooperative Commonwealth soon proved unfeasible. While Debs and DeLeon had personal political disagreements, they recognized the importance of forging an alliance between the groups and labor unions they represented.
Free Speech on Trial
His bitter political enemies recognized the enormous, unfiltered power of that latter communication tool, and after he reached the White House, they exerted enormous pressure upon Twitter to begin censoring him. The notion of an American tech company restricting the political speech of a sitting American President seemed like something out of a Monty Python sketch, but it actually happened. Meanwhile, many of his leading activist supporters and pundit allies were completely purged from that platform , blows that greatly hindered his reelection campaign. With Trump banned from Twitter in early 2021, his political standing soon ebbed away as more and more of his low-information political base gradually forgot about him. This led many observers to conclude that his time had passed and some rival would likely capture the Republican nomination in the 2024 primaries. With such exciting new topics, the endless Trump Political Reality show had suddenly returned as popular entertainment, regaining the very high ratings it had previously enjoyed. Trump once again became the great hero of his populist Republican supporters, with recent polls showing he was drawing far more support in the 2024 primaries than all his Republican rivals combined.
Indeed, some cynical observers even suggested that this outcome might have been intentional. Perhaps the Democrats regarded Trump as the weakest Republican candidate they might face in 2024, and sought to ensure his renomination. Such a deeply Machiavellian strategy might be possible, but all of these various prosecutions and trials will surely keep Trump at the top of the news cycle from now until November 2024, whether Election Day finds him still on trial or already serving time behind bars. As of a week ago, Trump had already been facing 71 separate state and federal felony indictments. Then he was struck by the weightiest federal charge of all, accusing him of organizing a conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election results. These days American society is deeply polarized and most of the charges against Trump will be tried in venues such as DC, Manhattan, and Atlanta where the jury-pools are sure to be heavily larded with Trump-haters.
With so many dozens of serious charges against him, our 45th President seems likely to end up behind bars. These latest indictments finally moved longtime progressive columnist and cartoonist Ted Rall into that same camp of outright Trump sympathizers. The massive vilification of Trump in such quarters indicates that those elites fear Trump as their most dangerous foe, so many voters may eventually conclude that the enemy of their enemy is at least worth a casual vote on the November ballot. But although countless American candidates throughout our history have bitterly complained about stolen elections and sometimes contested the outcomes, our rabidly partisan Democratic prosecutors have now decided to treat that behavior as a crime, apparently hoping to destroy their Trumpian nemesis using the power of the courts.
Goddard spent more than a decade as managing director and chief operating officer of a prominent investment firm in New York City. Previously, he was a policy adviser to a U. Senator and Governor.

Federal agents arrested scores of Socialists, Wobblies and other dissidents who dared to speak out. Rising from his sick bed, Debs delivered a series of antiwar speeches; he was arrested, charged with impeding the war effort, convicted and sentenced to 10 years in federal prison. In the eyes of many, it was one of his finest moments.
I said then, and I say now, that while there is a lower class I am in it, while there is a criminal element I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free. Harding, a Republican, freed Debs and 23 other prisoners of conscience. But the socialist ideal lived on, inspiring a new generation of social reformers in the 1930s who, under the banner of the New Deal, enacted most of the programs and policies called for in the Socialist Party platform of 1912. It was not the socialist commonwealth, but it was a genuine achievement—one for which Debs and his followers legitimately could claim some credit.

With a record 158 million votes cast, this amounted to a victory margin of around 0. So if just one American voter in 7,000 had changed his mind, Trump might have received another four years in office. One American voter in 7,000. Such an exceptionally narrow victory is extremely unusual in modern American history. More recently, George W.
Bush won a narrow reelection over Sen. John F. If our incompetent or dishonest media had correctly reported these simple facts, perhaps Democratic partisans would have been somewhat more understanding of the outrage expressed by so many of their Republican counterparts, who believed they had been cheated of their election victory. Furthermore, not only was the 2020 Presidential election remarkably close, but any objective examination of the facts clearly proves that outcome was stolen from Trump. This easily explains the widespread protests by his supporters in DC on January 6th, as I discussed a few days later.
After all, if they sincerely believed that a Trump victory would be catastrophic for America why would they not use every possible means, fair and foul alike, to save our country from that dire fate? Even leaving aside some of these plausible claims, the case for a stolen election seems almost airtight. But the most blatant election-theft was accomplished in absolutely plain sight. But the facts of this enormous political scandal were entirely ignored and boycotted by virtually every mainstream media outlet. So if the American voters had been allowed to learn the truth, Trump almost certainly would have won the election, quite possibly in an Electoral College landslide.
Given these facts, anyone who continues to deny that the election was stolen from Trump is simply being ridiculous. And when despite all that blatant unfairness and theft, the final margin of defeat is just one vote in 7,000, an explosion of popular outrage should only be expected.

This judicial innovation may be unique in the developed world and seems extremely rare even outside it. Rather than being prosecuted and imprisoned, AMLO eventually gave up on his unofficial presidency and after creating a new party as his vehicle, ran for president a third time in 2018, winning in a huge landslide despite any election fraud. Fortunately for AMLO, his protests of a stolen election had occurred in 2006, long before Trump entered the scene, so any attempt by his own government to prosecute and imprison him would have surely been denounced and ridiculed by the American establishment as an outrageous violation of basic democratic principles. But these days, the globally-dominant and Trump-hating American media plays a very different tune, so the precedent of prosecuting a losing candidate for protesting alleged election fraud may soon spread worldwide. In Brazil, the conservative establishment had used a somewhat doubtful corruption conviction to block former President Lula from seeking to regain the presidency , but once it was overturned by the courts, he successfully did so, and his own courts then used the excuse of election protests to prohibit his defeated rightwing opponent President Bolsonaro from trying to do the same in four years time. In India, the ultra-rightwing Modi government is overwhelmingly popular, but still decided to take no chances.
As a result, hundreds of strikers were killed, and millions of properties were destroyed. Overall, Eugene was arrested for his involvement where he was sent to prison. While serving his jail term, Debs came to love socialist ideologies. Before his release, he read countable books and letters from the socialism field. He was later released in 1895 where he played a prominent role in the Social Democracy of America. Afterward, he founded the Industrial Workers of the World union. It was a weekly magazine that achieved high accolades due to his high pitch of writing. In the mid of June in 1918, Eugene protested against the World War I where he came out with a negative speech. As a result, he was arrested and later convicted in court. Unfortunately, he founded himself behind bars for ten years.
It is the ruling class that invariably does both. They alone declare war and they alone make peace. The socialist leader received around one million votes, which were around for about six percent of the total ballots cast.
