With intensive effort Eliza makes progress, and Higgins introduces her to his mother Marie Lohr while local gentleman Freddy David Tree falls in love with Eliza at first sight. The big test looms at a gala event hosted by the Ambassador of Transylvania. An adaptation of the 1913 George Bernard Shaw play, Pygmalion boasts a witty, dynamic script, clashing characters, multiple attractive settings and brisk pacing. The film gently mocks both upper class haughtiness and working class contentment, with only Eliza possessing the courage to test the divide. Howard looking younger than his 45 years brings an uncompromising edge to the role of a stubbornly confirmed batchelor refusing any accommodation in his approach to life.

Генри говорит Элизе о том, что у неё ужаснейшее произношение. В частном же разговоре с Пиккерингом герой признаёт прирождённый талант и наличие острого слуха у бывшей цветочницы. Наконец-то Дулитл достигает определённого уровня, и профессор решает испытать девушку. Элиза должна будет присутствовать на званом ужине матери Генри. Так к миссис Хиггинс приходит и Фредди. Парень не узнаёт в модной даме нищую цветочницу, которую когда-то видел на площади.
Поначалу всё идёт очень хорошо. Правда Элиза ведёт себя неестественно, ведь у неё нет представления об этикете. Когда заходит разговор о погоде Дулитл рассказывает метеорологическую сводку. Когда же кто-то говорит о болезнях, то героиня не забывает в подробностях рассказать о своей умершей тетушке. Впрочем, девушка не верит в смерть от страшного заболевания. По словам Дулитл, её родственницу «пришили» врачи.
Чопорные гости в шоке от таких высказываний, Хиггинс же говорит, что это новый молодёжный сленг. Несмотря на это Фредди влюблён в «новую» знакомую. Вскоре девушка удаляется, гордо заявляя о том, что поедет домой на такси. Пиккиринг считает этот визит полным провалом. По его мнению, нужно прекратить жестокий эксперимент. Профессор же не желает останавливаться.
Он спрашивает девушку, готова ли она стараться в дальнейшём? Получив утвердительный ответ, Хиггинс продолжает обучение. Теперь он учитывает предыдущие ошибки. На этот раз помимо фонетики девушка изучает танцы и правила этикета при высшем дворе. Элиза разучивает, как нужно обращаться к королеве, премьер министру, главному судье и архиепископу. Наконец-то наступает самый важный день в жизни Дулитл.
Хиггинс идёт на приём греческого посла. Внешний вид девушки безупречен.
With Hiller, Eliza is keeping her Cockney soul under check at all times whereas Audrey Hepburn always seems to me as a born princess struggling to escape her flower girl disguise. The other performances are of a very high standard. Asquith does an excellent job of opening up the story so it does not seem unnecessarily stagey. I had a smile on my face throughout.

This Mr. Shaw, for many years identified with the legitimate theater, the rotogravure section, and the Letters-to-the-Editor columns, appears to have had little difficulty adapting himself to the strange new medium of the cinema. Shaw is not revolutionizing the cinema in Pygmalion any more than he revolutionized the theater when he first put his comedy on in London in 1914. The film version is no more startling, providing you keep a straight face upon the matter, for the camera is frequently flushing a covey of actors from a conversational thicket and Mr. All this, of course, providing one keeps a straight face upon the matter. But Pygmalion is not a comedy for straight faces, and anyone who puts one on at the Astor should have his theater-going credentials examined and his sense of humor sent off for repairs. In the Shaw repertory, it is not one of the major items, so need not be taken too seriously. Taken lightly, as befits it, the comedy trips light from the tongue of any troupe—stage or screen— which has the grace to memorize its lines, to say them well and with appropriate gesture, while a good director clears or clutters up his sets and adds the precious element of timing.
There is a rather hilarious reveal of their work when Eliza attends a tea party and, with a near perfect proper accent, makes inappropriate small talk in street slang. The disconnect between delivery and content is very amusing. After the rather botched tea party, Higgins and Eliza work some more and still some more — montage after montage — until she is ready for the big reveal. Is she now Cinderella? Can she pass as a duchess at the Transylvania ambassadorial ball? Yes, yes, she can. Eliza is irrevocably isolated from her roots, scared. The bet is over, and —object that she is to Higgins — she can now be cruelly and heartlessly discarded back into the gutter. Now the gloves are off, and the slippers are thrown. The rat-a-tat interchanges here, as Eliza and Higgins hash it out, is verbal foreplay at the highest level. I just cannot explain how gloriously pleasurable it is to watch these igniting exchanges. Shaw eschewed any romantic ending for Professor Higgins and Eliza Doolittle. But the movie adaptation is, mercifully, a wee bit more ambiguous for us romantics at heart, who dare to believe that even the staid and sardonic old bachelor can change, can drop his airs of practiced indifference, be vulnerable, express earnestness and kindness on occasion, instead of always hiding behind a shield of irony and wryness. Can our beauty transform this beast? It is a nuanced and impressive performance. And Wendy Hiller is equally nuanced and impressive in her portrayal of Eliza Doolittle. They both do. It is truly a tour de force and an absolute pleasure to behold.
Yet, unlike the fairy-tale flick of a magic wand, the transformation of Eliza is a long, grueling affair under the brutal tutelage of Henry Higgins Leslie Howard , professor of phonetics, confirmed bachelor and unrelenting taskmaster. Eliza must work and work hard to enact this transformation. He prides himself on pinpointing the sources of accents and dialects and is a self-absorbed, arrogant eccentric and internationally renowned expert with an acerbic and incisive wit. During the initial exchange, which introduces Higgins to a great admirer of his, Colonel George Pickering Scott Sutherland , Eliza overhears the bragging Higgins tell Sutherland that he could transform her, this lowly flower girl, into a duchess. Higgins then tosses some coins to Eliza and walks off with Sutherland. She has money in her pocket and intends to convince the professor to teach her enough proper English, so as to enable her to get a job as a flower girl in an actual shop. That is her ambition. Higgins quickly gets his own, grander ideas. He wagers with Sutherland that he can pass her off as a duchess at an ambassadorial reception within three to six months, dependent upon her work ethic. Eliza is bullied into acceptance. Her own father virtually sells her to Higgins, and that is that. The film uses montages, innovative in its time, to show this process.
