Austin bomber was 'domestic terrorist,' police chief says
The videotaped confession left behind by Conditt could provide some closure to the Austin community. But, authorities say they are stuck trying to determine whether releasing it will do more harm than good. There are no further suspects at this time. Authorities do not have any reason to believe there is a further destructive device out there but they are asking the community to remain vigilant. To see the unsealed court documents, go here.
Within seconds, the suspect had detonated a bomb inside his vehicle, blasting the officers backward, Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said. One officer then fired his weapon at Conditt, the chief said. The medical examiner has not finalized the cause of death, but the bomb caused "significant" injuries, he said. Police discovered a 25-minute video recording on a cellphone found with Conditt, which Manley said he considers a "confession" to the bombings. It described in great detail the differences among the bombs, he said, but no motive.
Law enforcement officials did not immediately say whether Conditt acted alone in the five bombings in the Texas capital and suburban San Antonio that killed two people and badly wounded four others. Fred Milanowski of the U. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said investigators were confident that "the same person built each one of these devices. Neighbors say he was home-schooled. He later attended Austin Community College from 2010 to 2012, according to a college spokeswoman, but he did not graduate.
In a 2012 online blog that the college spokeswoman said Conditt created as part of a U.
An affidavit filed in support of that complaint was also partly unsealed on Monday. It explains their basis for probable cause. There were six explosive devices between March 2nd and March 20th, two people were killed and several others injured.
Documents state the explosive devices shared commonalities: the manner of detonation, all used shrapnel and delivery method. Many questions remain, such as if these incidents were random or not. Conditt was captured on surveillance camera delivering two packages at the FedEx facility on Brodie Lane.
Investigators obtained surveillance video of Conditt walking into the store in a wig and walking back out to a vehicle with a license plate connected to his name. When Conditt turned on the phone, McCaul said, investigators were able to pinpoint him at a hotel in Round Rock, which led to a police chase.
Advertisement Officials described a harrowing scene at the end of the chase. After Austin police forced Conditt off the road to prevent him from getting on a freeway, officers surrounded the vehicle and banged on the windows, at which point Conditt set off a blast that sent officers flying backward. One officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Officials also announced they had filed a federal bomb-possession charge and arrest warrant against Conditt late Tuesday, shortly before he died, and officials had considered pursuing the death penalty. Mark Anthony Conditt, an unemployed college dropout who bought bomb-making materials at Home Depot, recorded the video hours before he died after detonating one of his own devices as SWAT teams closed in. It seemed to indicate the 23-year-old knew he was about to be caught, said Austin Police Chief Brian Manley. Authorities say they will not be releasing the video because the bombing investigation is ongoing. Conditt was tracked down using store surveillance video, cellphone signals and witness accounts of a customer shipping packages in a disguise that included a blond wig and gloves.
Police finally found him early Wednesday at a hotel in Pflugerville, about 17 miles northeast of Austin. Austin police say Conditt died after he set off an explosive device inside of his vehicle in a suburban Austin hotel parking lot as SWAT teams closed in. Officers prepared to move in for an arrest.
Conditt ran into a ditch on the side of the road, and SWAT officers approached, banging on his window. Within seconds, the suspect had detonated a bomb inside his vehicle, blasting the officers backward, Manley said. One officer then fired his weapon at Conditt, the chief said.

He was the only person in the facility when he left them Sunday morning and police were able to track him down with surveillance video and cell phone tracking. About 48 hours ago, the chief contacted the bomber via TV and tried to open a dialogue. He left a number for the killer to call. The response by the bomber was to leave the two bombs at a FedEx center. One of those went off prematurely in the facility, injuring one worker, and another was found and detonated by police. After the bomber left the hotel parking lot last night, the police closed in and stopped him on the Interstate. The bomber set a bomb off in his car, killing himself.

Investigators also determined that Conditt purchased signs like the one used to anchor the tripwire-rigged device that detonated Sunday night, Abbott said.
On Tuesday, police released CCTV footage purporting to show the bomber delivering a package to a Fedex shipping centre in San Antonio, where it later exploded. The bomb inside the package exploded at around 1am as it passed along a conveyor belt at the FedEx shipping centre in Schertz, around 60 miles from Austin. It was triggered by a nearly invisible tripwire, suggesting a "higher level of sophistication" than agents saw in the three previous package bombs left on doorsteps. It was the fourth bombing in less than three weeks, with investigators fearing the unhinged culprit was trying to outdo infamous "Unabomber" Ted Kaczynski, who killed three and injured 23.
