This class has the exception: At 3rd level, choose 3 Spells from the 1st level wizard list; 2 must be enchantment or illusion. This means that you can choose 1 spell from any school. We recommend one of these: Find Familiar: Summon a small animal to be your new pet, like an owl, snake, rat, etc. Burning Hands: Let loose a blast of fire in a 15ft cone. Targets make a dexterity saving throw or take 3d6 fire damage. If you have obtained a mysterious item or are unsure what something is laying before you, you can use this spell to have all the magical details revealed to you.

Bear in mind, Bard spells use Charisma as their casting ability, so consider your Charisma score before choosing this option. Druid A one-level dip into Druid can give you access to a variety of healing spells like Cure Wounds and Healing Word. However, the most significant advantage comes from the spell Goodberry. Each casting creates 10 berries that can heal 1 HP each. They last 24 hours, providing an efficient and resource-effective healing option throughout the day. Again, Druid spells are Wisdom-based, so a decent Wisdom score is needed for this multiclassing choice. While multiclassing can provide new options and versatility, it does come at the cost of delaying your Wizard progression. A well-crafted backstory gives your Healing Wizard depth, adding richness to your role-playing interactions and providing your Dungeon Master with narrative hooks for the campaign. Were they born with an innate talent, or did they stumble upon an ancient tome of knowledge? Perhaps they were mentored by an older wizard, or they honed their skills at a magical academy. Motivation for Healing Why did your character decide to focus on healing and support magic? Did they witness a tragedy they were powerless to prevent, sparking a desire to protect others? Maybe they were touched by the suffering of those around them and vowed to alleviate it. School of Magic Why did your character choose their specific school of magic? Was it aligned with their healing aspirations, or was there another reason behind it? Adventuring Life Finally, why did your character choose the adventuring life? Are they searching for arcane knowledge, seeking to test their abilities, or hoping to make a difference in the world? Understanding why your character decided to leave their previous life for the uncertainty and danger of adventuring can add depth and intrigue to their story. One day, while organizing ancient texts, a dusty, old tome fell from a shelf, revealing spells of the Abjuration school. His fascination piqued, Orin started practicing magic in secret. His peaceful life was shattered when a magical catastrophe struck Silverymoon, causing widespread destruction and loss. Unable to prevent the disaster and heartbroken at the suffering he saw, Orin vowed to focus his magical abilities on protection and healing. He chose to venture into the world, hoping to preempt such disasters and protect others from harm. Make sure their story resonates with you and adds to your enjoyment of the game. Mastering this class requires a good understanding of spell mechanics and clever usage of your spells and abilities. Here are some tips to maximize your effectiveness in role-playing and gameplay as a Healing Wizard. Roleplay Tips Creative Problem Solving: As a Wizard, you have a broad range of spells at your disposal, many of which can be used creatively to circumvent obstacles or solve problems. Relationships: Build relationships with your party members. Backstory Integration: Integrate your backstory into your interactions and decisions. Are you overly protective due to a past tragedy, or are you driven by a desire to prevent suffering? Knowledge Seeker: Wizards are often depicted as scholars and knowledge seekers. Embrace this aspect of your character, pursuing knowledge and new spells to increase your capability to protect and support.

Dnd 5e Gnome Wikidot 5e Wizard Spells

The Lantern of Revealing is a hooded lantern that can burn for six hours. It sheds 30 feet of bright light which reveals all invisible creatures or objects. This item would be a great gift to your players if you are planning to send them on fey adventures, as many of the fey creatures are able to turn invisible. It would also be helpful in Underdark situations where darkness naturally hides an enemy. The lantern can be used to reveal things to those who lack dark vision while also adding the extra benefit of revealing anything that hides in more than the dark. The lantern can also be dimmed so that any of the players who want to take advantage of invisibility are still able to do so.

Crystal Ball wondrous item, very rare or legendary : Endorsed by Mordenkainen myself! Everyone knows that. Mechanically, the Crystal Ball allows the user to cast the scrying spell with a DC17 save. There are three legendary variants of the ball, all of which fall into the divination school of magic. The first is the Crystal Ball of Mind Reading, which allows you to cast detect thoughts while scrying.

The second legendary variant of this magic item is the Crystal Ball of Telepathy. This item lets the user cast telepathy through the scrying. While the spell telepathy is itself an evocation, there are several telepathy-like spells on the divination list to keep this magic on brand. Not only does the Crystal Ball of Telepathy let the user commune with others through the use of its magic, it also allows you to cast suggestion once a day, again with a DC17 save. Talk about a seriously scary item!

The third variant is the Crystal Ball of True Seeing, which does exactly what it sounds like. After the flare of the telepathy ball, that might not seem like much. They make really cool homebrew items with unique art, so be sure to check them out! A seriously great Patreon creator! Be sure to check them out!

The Crystal Ball and all of its variants are obviously extremely powerful magic items. I would be very cautious about giving it to players, and would perhaps be more prone to lend it or allow them to pay an NPC for the services of one. If you do want to allow one to fall into the hands of your players, bear in mind that these are very high level spells that the ball can cast. I would save it as a reward for late-game, high level players who are facing incredibly tough challenges. Describing Divination Magic in Your World Since Divination magic is mostly invisible magic, it can be more difficult to describe the way this magic appears in your world.

Divination magic provides a brief glimpse into the Weave…what would happen if players looked for too long? Sight: As quoted above, those who use divination magic have the ability to glimpse the Weave. Imagine that your players have used detect magic on an interesting ring they have just found. They are delighted to discover that it is, indeed, a magic ring, and they naturally want to know what school of magic is associated with it. But that could be disappointing to the wizard who wants to know more about this cool magic item they just found.

Auras of magic are a great way to describe magic items without giving away too much information or having to pick a school of magic! Perhaps you can describe how the threads of the Weave are pulled into the gem of the ring and pulse out in shimmering waves, like heat waves in the desert. Or, perhaps you see the Weave twisting around the ring and emanating as a protective shield, repelling the cool air away from the item or attuned user. If that seems like too much detail to give the players unless they cast identify, you can always simplify it. The evocation item just changes the effect of the Weave around it, whereas the abjuration item forms a barrier.

Feels abjuration-y. So much of the way we learn and process information comes from what we hear. There is more to the sound of the School of Divination than just the silly voices we create whenever our druid casts speak with animals. Consider describing the sensation of a player casting clairvoyance. Seriously though, I believe every DM has a squirrel voice They are suddenly being able to hear in another room as if they stood there themselves.

Or, in a less serious game, maybe the whole dial-up internet spiel. From the ethereal whispers of the otherworldly murmuring knowledge into your mind to the way a comprehended language manifests to the ear of those under the influence of the Weave, there are countless creative ways to describe the sound of this invisible magic! Smell: Scent is another great way to describe divination magic.

All the while making sure the storms around them worsen, primarily as they will target villages easily disconnected from society through a simple avalanche. They want to see the slow suffering of starvation and chill. They will loosen the thatching of rooftops in the village so that the fight against the cold is slow. They do not want you to merely freeze to death. The Hag wants you to starve and wither and let your corpse be the latest totem of suffering, as your family will have become too weak to pull you out of the corner that had had a small hole carved in for the winter to take you in the night. Maddening Feast When the Bheur is in combat and kills a foe, they will often forgo the battle to begin feasting on the corpse.

The frightened modifier leaves the creature incapacitated while moving erratically. If successful in the save, the creature will become immune to their Maddening Feast for the next 24 hours. A Graystaff is made from a gray piece of wood through which the Hag focuses her power. Using this, she can use it as aforroom for flying or augment her magic, allowing for the use of more powerful spells. Weird Magic There is a trick to capturing the attention of a Hag in a trade. They collect peculiar recipes, heinous rituals, and abnormal items throughout their eternal lives. A Hag is rarely subtly in macabre aesthetic. Single-Use Charms and Trinkets for a Hag can be made by a DM by using spells and monster effects used by creatures that are weaker or equal to their CR rating. For example, Cloud of Daggers is a 2nd level spell that fills a five-foot area with daggers that do 4d4 damage to a creature.

This can be simulated by a Green Hag CR 3 by using a magic mirror that, upon being broken, releases a variant that uses shards of glass.

The adventure is designed 1st to 4th level characters and features plenty of exploration, combat, puzzle solving, a mystery and an amazing dungeon crawl, with the entire module reaching a satisfying conclusion in about 6-8 hours. One-Page One-Shots This collection from game designer Robert Peake aka the Spontaneous Dungeon Master features 10 amazing bite-sized adventures that run the gamut from dungeon crawls and urban adventures to wilderness explorations and role-playing heavy mysteries. Each adventure takes up just a single page yet is crammed with amazing puzzles, NPCs and plots. The best part though and the reason this made our list is that each adventure is ready to go right out of the gate without any real setup required for DMs. Get it on DMs Guild 6. The story follows an ancient gold dragon who enlists the players to help track down a magical musical instrument that was last seen in the depths in a haunted forest. It features exploration, combat and a unique and surprisingly heart warming plot that really showcases the best of what DnD is all about.

Notably, this is part of the Clover Group Series of one shot adventures, which are also fantastic and definitely worth running. Get it on DMs Guild 5.

I classified spells by defense, offense, utility, or versatility fits several uses.

Many spells are not on my list, but they have their niches in the game. For that ranked list, I looked at the reliability, frequency, versatility, and impact of each spell. This article would be difficult to manage if I also gave recommendations for specific Wizard subclasses.

For more information on which spells are better for particular Wizards by Arcane Tradition, please read my article that rates each Wizard subclass. You can also watch my video on this topic. If you want to be homies, like and subscribe to our YouTube channel!

They scale with your character level, not your Wizard level, making them important for multiclassing. Cantrips may overshadow low-level offensive spells easily at higher levels. Defense Shocking Grasp : Deals low damage.

Gains advantage against metal armor. Not dependent on saving throw. Offense Booming Blade : Good for Wizards utilizing weapons.

Bladesingers, mostly. Chill Touch : Deal decent damage and stop a foe from healing. Firebolt : Good range.

Green-Flame Blade : Good for Wizards utilizing weapons. Ray of Frost : Deal decent damage and slow a foe. Utility Mage Hand : Rewards creativity.

It helps to avoid trap triggers. Open doors from the other side. Just remember its limits.

Prestidigitation : Rewards creativity. Conceal poison in foods by manipulating taste. Create a skunk smell.

Add smells and sounds to your storytelling. Clean blood out of your clothes. Requires verbal and somatic components, so you may be noticed when casting.

Versatility Minor Illusion : You can have heaps of fun with this spell if you get creative and understand its limits. Mold Earth : Rewards creativity. Hide bodies or stash your supplies.

Create a trench for cover in combat or to conceal an ambush. Defense Absorb Elements : Reaction to resist one elemental damage type for the round. The melee damage boost is less important for Wizards Bladesingers are an exception.

Feather Fall : Save everyone when falling or descending quickly. Defend against Magic Missile. Offense Magic Missile : Reliable damage.

Each dart can force a concentration saving throw , making it useful for breaking enemy concentration. Beware the Shield spell countermeasure. Sleep : Good at low levels.

I might not prepare it often at higher levels. You can force an enemy to fall prone, allowing allies to get into position for melee attacks with advantage. Incapacitating a foe will automatically end its concentration on a spell.

Just remember the limitation on what can cause the spell to end. Thunderwave : Damage with potential knockback. Utility Charm Person : Can drastically simplify social encounters.

It scales well with upcasting. Watch out for charm-immune creatures.

Wish 5e: DnD 5e Spell Guide – RPGBOT

A large list of official and unofficial spells for Dungeons and Dragons 5e, easily sortable and searchable. Blessings and charms are both other forms of rewards classified as supernatural gifts in the Dungeon Master's Guide. Blessings. See page 227 of the Dungeon Master's Guide for how blessings are awarded and what kind of benefit they grant. In this post, DnD 5e Psychic Damage Explained, we’re going to have a quick look at how Psychic Damage works, give some details on creatures and spells that cause it and look at how to describe it.

D&D 5th Edition

Snuff out torches if enemies lack darkvision. It requires concentration but lasts ten minutes, allowing you to cast it ahead of an encounter. Mirror Image : No concentration required. It can turn incoming hits against you into misses. Offense Hold Person : Scales well to paralyze multiple enemies.

Scales well with upcasting. Web : Excellent AOE disabling spell to keep enemies stationary and vulnerable. Utility Alter Self : Create seamless disguises or learn to swim. See Invisibility : Gets better as you level up.

No concentration is required. Suggestion : Circumvent entire problems with manipulation. Misty Step : Escape or infiltrate with a bonus action. Low-level teleportation is always good to have.

Players audibly cheer when they counter a scary spell. Hypnotic Pattern : Incapacitating enemies can be better than damaging them with Fireball. Good at all levels. You open up many possibilities when you can safely navigate the water.

Versatility Dispel Magic : Spell effects come up often, so Dispel Magic is nearly guaranteed to be useful. Fly : Gain a fast flying speed. Avoid many problems that earth-bound folks endure. Avoid enemy reach.

Gaseous Form : Escape or infiltrate as you become a gassy science experiment. Haste : Strong buff for yourself and allies. Meta-effect to make other players like you. Major Image : This is the spell you envision when you imagine casting illusion magic.

Limit movement, visibility, and concentration. Knock runners and flyers down. Fire Shield : No concentration is required as you punish melee attackers and resist either cold or fire damage common damage types. Force enemies relying on sight to move through the wall.

This puts them out of position and forces them to take damage. Watery Sphere : Use on enemy spellcasters whose Strength saving throws are likely to fail. Utility Arcane Eye : Scout safely from a distance to map out entire dungeons and strongholds. Charm Monster : You can learn a lot from a happy monster who is willing to talk to you.

Mephits can be summoned in bulk, for example. The Mephits collectively use breath attacks for machine-gun AOE, and they explode with various effects when they die. They can fly and swim. This spell is packed with mischief.

This spell is deceptively useful. I often see it come in handy. Dimension Door : Teleportation with a long-range and no line-of-sight requirement. Works well for a Contingency spell at higher levels.

Bring a friend! Greater Invisibility : Continue casting non-concentration spells while concealed. It can be cast on allies. Shorter duration than Invisibility, but with more options for what you can do without ending the illusion.

Polymorph : One of the best, most versatile spells in the game. Make sure you download an app for beast stats to save time your group will thank you. The damage output of this spell is no joke.

Finally, add 8 to these two numbers — this shows how difficult it is for others to resist or evade your spells, no matter how proficient or powerful they are. Remember that some class features or individual spells may also affect this calculation! So watch out for those while playing. Knowing the mechanics of Spell DC will surely give you an edge in casting successful spells! The Role of Different Classes in Spell DC Are you ready to explore the role different classes play in determining how hard it is for adversaries to dodge or resist your magical abilities? All three have a distinct approach that affects their casting proficiency.

Clerics and Druids draw strength from Wisdom. The wiser they are, the more formidable their spells become. So think carefully and strategically about which class best suits your style, and enjoy weaving potent magic that leaves enemies shaking!

Please fix these inaccessible features. You seem to have a very refined, interface and menu system. Thank you so much for the great effort! Developer Response , Dear Newdeath gaming, thank you so much for your feedback. Please update the app: you will find a button to close the spell tab and return to the main screen. Additionally, this spell forces the target to obey your commands to the best of their ability, making powerful enemies powerful allies instead, or easily removing a living threat if the environment and situation make it possible. Wall of Force was mentioned before due to its sheer size and invulnerability to damage, but perhaps you would prefer a spell that fits a rocky, geological theme, that the caster can shape to their will, with the drawback of a smaller area of effect. If so, Wall of Stone is a premium pick spell for you. Wall of Stone erects a solid wall of stone that is impregnable and immune to all damage for its duration. As implied, the spell allows the caster to shape the wall however they see fit, allowing the creation of an enclosed space or a curve to maximize coverage properly.

The wall can also push enemies to either side of it, or lift them into the air, giving access to a spell that separates and thins crowds. The wall is also totally solid, as opposed to Wall of Force being a transparent forcefield, so vision is cut off on both sides. This has equal advantages as it does disadvantages, but the tradeoff is enough to warrant taking this spell. Overall, Wall of Stone is a great pick that can be used both defensively and offensively- a rare trait among the other wall counterparts. Planar Binding Planar Binding is a powerful abjuration spell that allows you to bind an extraplanar creature to your will.

This spell requires a 1-hour casting time and a costly material component, but if successful, it allows you to command the creature to perform tasks for you for up to 24 hours. From a role-playing perspective, the potential of Plane Binding makes it one of the most powerful spells a Wizard can take, especially when it is available at the midgame level 5 point.

Interested in how to use this kind of divination in a game? Curse of Strahd is a great example! Check out my article of Card Readings in Curse of Strahd and use it as a guideline for creating fortunes in your own game! There are other spells like augury, such as commune, which create a direct link between the caster and their deity for more specific input. Not only does it reveal the topography, it also tells you what is on the land, such as people, fey, fiends, and notable resources.

Getting Insight on things: The last notable subset of the School of Divination can be described as spells that give insight. These are spells like guidance, true strike, and gift of alacrity. This school of magic is like a guidepost pointing the way to advantage and knowledge. Guidance and true strike are both cantrips that give the target of the spell an advantage over their circumstance or enemies. The willing creature affected by this spell can add 1d4 to an ability check of their choice. Because of the name of the spell and the school of magic it is categorized as I like to think of this effect as the result of divine insight imparted by the magic. Want to gain the upper hand in combat?

Knowing what your enemies will do before they do it is a great way! As for gift of alacrity, this might seem like an odd spell to place under this category. All it does is grant a willing creature an extra 1d8 to their initiative roll. But because initiative is how fast one responds to danger, I would argue that the effect of this spell is some sort of divine insight that allows the target of the spell to react faster than normal. Some of them are items that literally cast divination spells, while others just follow the rules of divination magic by revealing information. Here are a few of my favorites. Medallion of Thoughts wondrous item, uncommon : Creepy aesthetic, but super useful!

The Medallion of Thought is an item that simply casts one of the spells from the School of Divination. It carries with it three charges of detect thoughts, and regains 1d3 expended charges at dawn. It adds a new level to that aspect of the game that they could really dig into. Lantern of Revealing wondrous item, uncommon : A must have if you are dealing with tricky fey creatures! The Lantern of Revealing is a hooded lantern that can burn for six hours. It sheds 30 feet of bright light which reveals all invisible creatures or objects. This item would be a great gift to your players if you are planning to send them on fey adventures, as many of the fey creatures are able to turn invisible.

It can delay your access to higher-level spells and class features, so it should be carefully considered and not just taken on a whim. For a Healing Wizard, there are a couple of classes worth considering for multiclassing. Even with just a one-level dip, you gain access to healing spells like Cure Wounds and Healing Word, which can be quite handy for emergency situations. The Life Domain can provide further enhancements to your healing spells. Bard Bards are versatile spellcasters with a list of supportive spells.

Additionally, you get access to healing spells like Cure Wounds and lesser restoration. 13 ways a character can be insta-killed in Dungeons and Dragons 5e

But when your soul is pushed to the brink, you may find this spell indispensable. Of course, watch out for Charisma-saving throw spells like banishment, plane shift, or the new Soul Expulsion , which specializes in targeting loose souls like ghosts, wraiths, or those being affected by certain Soul Magic spells like magic jar that allow them or force them to exist as souls outside their body. Despite that, Soul expulsion is a powerful combat spell against all types of creatures.

If she takes 18 damage from an attack, she is reduced to 0 hit points, but 12 damage remains. Because the remaining damage equals her hit point maximum, the cleric dies. Not so much of an issue at higher levels when your max HP reaches into well over 100, but absolutely deadly at lower levels. The 9th level Bard, Sorcerer, Warlock, and Wizard spell Power Word Kill is an instantaneous spell that does one single thing: It kills its target outright if they have fewer than 100 hp.

There is no saving throw.

Then you can access creatures from the Feywild but not a creature standing right in front of you- but commanding and then summoning a creature from another realm will demonstrate power beyond what others suspected your Wizard to be capable of. Additionally, creatures from other planes will possess unique abilities that can create fun situations and different solutions to problems that were otherwise not accessible by your party. Information, power, and reputation are all at your fingertips when you take this spell for yourself.

Create homunculus Another spell that generates permanent minions is create homunculus. This one is a little bit improved compared to an actual familiar, because it has an infinite telepathic range. For options on how to use them, once again refer to our Spell Spotlight: Find Familiar. However, if you have ways to circumvent this downside, such as by being a School of Necromancy Wizard, you can make your homunculus rather bulky if you are willing to use up some Hit Die. Create magen Another summon added to the list, this time from the adventure Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden.

Create magen is not as powerful as a simulacrum, but you can still create yourself a new ally. The best options for this are the galvan magen and the hypnos magen. Again, the School of Necromancy Wizard has the fix for this, and synergizes well with this spell. This is the true capstone for this Wizard subclass. Another option is getting a friend to cast aura of life on you before casting this spell. Magic jar This is one of the most complicated spells in the game, deserving at least its own article to even attempt to unpack it. To put it simply, this spell is about acquiring a fresh, new, permanent body from the friends you encounter along the way. It can not only improve your physical stats and passive traits, but also lets you access new innate abilities. It can be as simple as possessing a drow house captain with a neat bonus action ability or duergar despot for its immensely powerful multiattack, or it can be as elaborate as possessing a dragon in its humanoid form to take advantage of its Change Shape ability and gain access to many other stat blocks in the game, with different set ups to negate its downside entirely.

Planar binding Make an ally with this spell, or your own personal army. The options opened up with this and 180 days of servitude are quite large, especially if you combine it with true polymorph. This can even be done mid-combat, if you are feeling particularly lucky. Plane shift Plane shift is normally limited by its material component. But no more! You get this same option through true polymorph at the same level when choosing creatures who can cast the spell without components, but hey, options are nice. You can also go to a different spot on the plane you are already on by first casting rope trick, making this into a reliable version of teleport. Resurrection No more is the fate of your allies in the hands of your more divine casters! Now you too get to bring back creatures from the dead, for free!

This is similar to clone, but with less prep time. This can obviously also be used during adventuring. Glyph of warding This spell has a costly material component and requires the casting of an additional spell as part of it—however, the costs can be mitigated by the casting of wish. Upon triggering the glyph, you can then activate the spell s and give you or your allies a desired spell effect without using any spell slot or concentration. Symbol The potency of this spell is rather straightforward. You can pick from its list of effects that target different saving throws, and they will typically remove creatures within from the fight completely on a failed save. Notably, Stunning, Insanity, and Hopelessness are the staple choices, targeting Wisdom, Intelligence, and Charisma respectively. This lets you keep the effect or multiple of it around for as long as you want until it is triggered. If you have an entire year of downtime and you have 9th level spells, you basically have won the game anyway, but these options are quite cute and can be an inspiration for worldbuilding.

In Combat During adventuring, or in combat, your priorities are different to when you are not. As with the previous section, these are spells that will typically be better in combat than outside of it, but feel free to play around with them during downtime or as a rest cast option. For the first, you can force creatures to make a save for frightened, without a repeated save. If they get 60 feet away, or lose sight of the target, it ends, but they are once again frightened if they can see it or get close enough again. The other use forces creatures to clump up and makes them unable to move away, which should allow you and your party to set up and place areas of effect perfectly. While out of combat, you can instead place the effect on an object to carry it around, since the spell lasts for 10 whole days. Dark star Dark star is a spell that is normally only accessible to the practitioners of Dunamancy, but through wish almost everything is possible. This spell works nicely as a disruptive area of effect, since the area becomes difficult terrain, it blocks sight and can stop spells from being cast with verbal components. It has both a huge radius and a far range, and damages anyone inside.

Druid grove Druid grove is normally a spell that requires 10 minutes to cast, but with the power of the wish spell, it can be cast as an action, allowing for usage in combat.
