If Sanjeev Kumar were alive, he would have turned 79 on July 9. Would he still be acting, though? I am tempted to say yes. These days, strong, author-backed roles are being scripted for senior actors. If good health had been on his side, he would have definitely made his presence felt on the big screen. Ironically, he had portrayed older characters even when he was in his prime. Neither was he insistent on bespoke costumes and faux sophistication. Born Harihar Jethalal Jariwala in Surat, Gujarat, it is said that he lived with a congenital heart condition ever since his birth.

Formally dressed in a grey suit, white shirt and a blue tie, when he strode on to the stage with a smile, it was a heartbreaking sight.
That was the last time I saw Sanjeev Kumar. Indeed, it was with side-bar-but-attention-grabbing roles in Hum Hindustani 1960 , Aao Pyaar Karen 1964 , Sunghursh and Shikar both released in 1968 that Sanjeev Kumar asserted that he belonged to the film star constellation.
Sulakashana loved only Sanjeev Kumar who loved only Hema who loved none but Dharmendra. Sulakshana kept hoping against hope that Sanjeev would change his mind. He died of heart complications leaving Sulakshana heartbroken for life. She rapidly lost touch with reality.
He was 47 at that time. Also, what Kumar had mentioned about men in his family dying before turning 50 was also true.
