Some estimates number his victims as high as 24, but the truth is no one will ever know the exact figure. In those days visitors entered and left countries like Thailand, Hong Kong and Nepal with minimum official processing. Young idealists, trusting backpackers and hash-smoking stoners were looking to get lost, and Sobhraj made sure some of them were never found. He was a charismatic figure, fluent in several languages, and finely tuned to what budget travellers wanted. He would befriend them, advise them on where to eat and how to buy gemstones, sometimes put them up at the Bangkok apartment he shared with his French-Canadian girlfriend, and then kill them. He killed them by first drugging their drinks and then stabbing or choking them. Sometimes he would complete the murder by setting the body on fire - in more than one case, investigators found that the victim was not dead when he or she was set alight.
He became known as the Bikini Killer after the swimsuit one of his victims was wearing when she was discovered. Afterwards, he would steal their belongings and identities, often travelling the world on their passports and money. And such was the richly implausible nature of his exploits that Sobhraj generated his own impressive literary testaments.

He denied killing Connie Jo Bronzich, and his lawyers said the charge against him was based on assumption. His release has been delayed by a day. Immigration officials on Thursday requested to postpone the release till Friday, citing lack of space to keep him. The apex court had ordered the government to extradite Sobhraj within 15 days to the country which had issued him the passport, unless he was wanted in some other cases. He was convicted of the murder of Canadian tourist Laurent Carrier in 2014 and given a second life sentence. Life sentence in Nepal means 20 years of imprisonment.
His victims were strangled, beaten or burned, and he often used the passports of his male victims to travel to his next destination. It became the title of a hit series made by the BBC and Netflix that was based on his life. He was arrested in India in 1976, after a French tourist died from poisoning at a Delhi hotel, and was sentenced to 12 years for murder. Sobhraj ultimately spent 21 years in jail, with a brief break in 1986 when he escaped and was caught again in the Indian coastal state of Goa. A court there handed him a life sentence the following year for killing US tourist Connie Jo Bronzich in 1975.
In 1996, he had escaped from a prison in New Delhi after it looked likely that he would be extradited to Thailand to face charges of murdering six women, all wearing bikinis, on a beach at Pattaya. Sobhraj was later rearrested in Goa. He was known to have been living quietly in France since his release from prison in India. Sobhraj argued in his petition that he has already served 19 years in jail and that he is 78 years old now. Kathmandu and Bhaktapur district courts had found him guilty for the murders of American and Canadian citizens in 1975.
