In 1979, Voldemort demanded the use of a house-elf, and Regulus sent Kreacher , a family elf that he was very fond of. Regulus had commanded Kreacher to come back, however, so the elf was compelled to return using house-elf magic. The story Kreacher told Regulus was the last straw and the young man became determined to destroy Voldemort DH10. From arrogant hints the Dark Lord had dropped, Regulus figured out what the locket was — an evil Horcrux. Regulus ordered Kreacher to return to the island with him, substituted a fake horcrux for the real one, then told Kreacher to take the real Horcrux locket and destroy it. Regulus, who had drunk the potion in the stone basin to get to the locket, was attacked and drowned by the Inferi in the underground lake DH10. He had forbidden Kreacher to tell anyone in the family what had happened, so they would be protected by not knowing.
Harry travelled to the sea cave with Dumbledore and retrieved the gold locket which Regulus and Kreacher left in the stone basin.
Voldemort never mentioned him, tried to find him, or found it odd that he was gone. Voldemort also never found out until the very end that his locket had disappeared, and even then, he attributed that disappearance to Dumbledore. This suggests that either a Death Eater figured out that he was going to betray Voldemort, but then Regulus died at the lake unbeknownst to anyone else, and that Death Eater decided he was better off keeping his mouth shut rather than talking to Voldemort about the potential problem, OR members of the Order of the Phoenix knew that Regulus was going after something or was trying to betray Voldemort, but then was never heard of again two weeks later. I think Regulus came to a member of the Order of the Phoenix and explained his doubts and willingness to contribute to the takedown of Lord Voldemort. In the book, the Black family tree takes up a whole wall and shows an image of all of the members of the family except for those who did something to betray the family or the pureblood status. In the film, those who died are portrayed as a skull rather than a picture.

After giving his motorbike to Hagrid so that Hagrid could deliver Harry to the Dursleys , Sirius then tracked down Pettigrew, determined to kill him in revenge. However, Pettigrew outwitted him: confronted by Sirius on a city street, he created an explosion, faking his own death leaving a severed finger behind as evidence and killing twelve Muggles in the process. Sirius was arrested, accused of murdering Pettigrew and the muggles and of serving Voldemort, and was promptly thrown in prison by Barty Crouch, Sr. Sirius states that unlike most other Azkaban prisoners who often became insane during their terms of imprisonment , he was able to keep his sanity because he knew he was innocent, and also used his Animagus form to ward off the Dementors , who are unable to perceive unsophisticated canine minds.
Appearances Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Twelve years into his sentence, Sirius sees a picture of the Weasley family on the front cover of the Daily Prophet. He realises that stationed at Hogwarts, Pettigrew will easily be able to deliver Harry to Voldemort should Voldemort ever regain power. This knowledge clears his mind and gives him the mental strength to escape Azkaban. He is the first person known to have escaped the wizard prison by his own means, accomplishing this feat by transforming into his Animagus dog form.
After his escape, Sirius takes refuge in and around Hogsmeade , intent on exacting revenge upon Pettigrew and remaining near Harry. Knowing that the dementors have been stationed around Hogsmeade and at Hogwarts, Sirius remains in his Animagus form during this time, and is able to enter the Hogwarts grounds without being recognised by the dementors. Harry catches several glimpses of Sirius in his dog form and mistakenly believes him to be the Grim. Lupin, who has learned that Sirius is innocent, is reunited in friendship with him.
Pettigrew is unmasked, and, most importantly, Harry stops Sirius and Lupin from murdering Pettigrew, arguing that his father would not want his friends to commit murder. Harry and Hermione help him escape with Buckbeak , a hippogriff who had also been unjustly condemned. Sirius is once again a wanted man. There, he slowly recovers from his years in Azkaban and regains his health.

Lord Voldemort had asked his Death Eaters for a house elf. Regulus wanted to impress Lord Voldemort, so he offered him Kreacher. But he obviously had his doubts because Regulus ordered Kreacher to come back no matter what. This was the point at which Regulus created a duplicate locket, put the note inside, and ordered Kreacher to take them both back to the hiding place.
On the island located in the middle of the lake where the locket was hidden, Regulus ordered Kreacher to return home no matter what and then sacrificed himself by drinking the poison and letting the inferi drag him to his death. Kreacher overwhelmed at the loss of his master, did everything he could to try and destroy the Horcrux but was unable to. Moreover, Kreacher had to bear the burden of knowing what happened but being under direct orders not to tell anyone. This meant that the house-elf had to watch his other masters mourn the loss of their son.
Kreacher was unable to tell anyone what had happened at all until Harry Potter became his new master and ordered him to explain what happened. The exchange resulted in Harry, Hermione, and Ron having a newfound respect for the house-elf, and the house-elf, in turn showing respect for them.
Regulus ordered Kreacher to return to the island with him, substituted a fake horcrux for the real one, then told Kreacher to take the real Horcrux locket and destroy it.
