He is a fluid skater, so he generates a lot of offense on the rush and he is effective on the powerplay. Despite having the fourth-most games played out of this class, the upside of the players above him is higher. Rather than trying to rush the puck every time, he identifies when he can burn the defender and when to make a play. He is also getting better at producing from a standstill and could play on the powerplay in the NHL. He is an elite skater who is incredibly poised with the puck on his stick. The analytics rate him highly due to his efficiency at carrying the puck, but he will need to start using his standout puck skills to create offense to justify this ranking. This season he has thrived in an increased role. Marie Greyhounds, but he still projects as a top-six offensive talent in the NHL. He then exploded the next year and was one of the best players in the league and for Team Canada as they won gold at the World Juniors. His size and skill have turned him into a menace at the AHL level. His average footspeed is the only thing holding him back. His offense has slowed down a bit after turning pro in his draft-year-plus-one season but has been playing tough matchups and killing penalties. He moves around very well for a big man, allowing him to break up plays and then join the ensuing rush. His average skating and one-dimensional game have been exposed and the high-end puck skills are yet to shine through. More time in the AHL could be helpful. He has a good, quick wrist shot and passes the puck well enough, but his lack of foot speed holds him back from being a truly dynamic player. Another player in this class who has struggled with injuries, he missed all of 2018-19 due to a concussion. He played just 40 games in the AHL last year and really blossomed near the end of the season with 11 points in his last 13 games. At six-foot-two, 185-pounds, he could add some weight but has managed without it due to his smooth skating stride and four-way quickness.
The Draft will mark the second time the Flyers make the second overall selection. They went No. They picked No. Like the Devils, the Stars will be making a historic pick for their franchise, picking inside the top three for the first time.

Whereas Makar usually creates offence rushing full-speed at defenders, Heiskanen is much more subtle. He scans the zone from the point and makes little feints before finding his target. He is every bit as good a skater as Makar and his zone entry and exit numbers are also elite. Heiskanen is significantly better defensively, playing 25-plus minutes in both of his playoff campaigns. He is incredibly efficient at stunting offense with his body and stick.
The Stars will be content having picked Heiskanen third. He is a terrific playmaker — he ranked 10th in assists-per-60 last season — and his tireless work ethic makes him difficult to play against. He never stops competing, winning pucks and generating chances for his teammates. He has shown some flair this season, too. Passing by Robert Thomas has been so nice this season pic. He has an elusive release and picks corners with ease.
He should feast on weak matchups as a second-line center this year. In his final year of junior, he carried the Guelph Storm to the Memorial Cup with 42 points in 24 playoff games. In the NHL, he has continued to produce at an impressive rate and has shown he can run a powerplay. Some have given up on him, but if he remains healthy he can still reach his potential. His frame means he can win pick battles and maintain possession, and his quick hands and creativity mean he can create chances. He is just as good as a setup man or a finisher.
If he can round out his game and start to make the simple plays more consistently, he may end up higher on this list. However, the players above him have been more effective thus far.
He can play both the power and the finesse game. Patrick works well down low, using his big body to shield the puck and to make plays in the cycle game. He also plays a strong two-way game, and is even used to kill penalties. Patrick had 41 goals and 102 points in 71 games for the Wheat Kings last season. He moves well both forwards and backwards, with excellent speed and acceleration. He also has very good edgework and pivots. As such he can cover a ton of ice. He can make offensive plays rushing the puck, or pinching in at the blueline; but still has the speed to get back defensively.
Liljegren has the poise and smarts to quarterback a power play. He has excellent vision, and makes good passes to set things up at the line. He can also make the long breakout pass to hit a teammate streaking through the neutral zone. He uses it to get in on the fore check and cause problems for defenders. He uses his size to shield the puck and maintain possession in the cycle game, and uses his powerful stride to fight through checks and drive the net. Vilardi has a very long reach and excellent puck handling ability. He uses these assets to extend plays and wait for teammates to get open, before hitting them with a pass. Vilardi is constantly moving and getting involved in the play. He is extremely gritty and involved in battles along the boards, and in front of the net. The power forward prospect also has a very good wrist shot.
With Windsor hosting the 2017 Memorial Cup , there will be plenty of opportunities to show off his skills to the scouts. He put up 17 goals and 38 points in 62 games last year. He has an excellent array of shots, with good power and accuracy on his wrist shot, snap shot and slap shot. A sniper, Comtois has a very quick release that can handcuff opposing goaltenders. He also has excellent vision and passing skills. Comtois can extend plays by using his stick handling and puck protection to control the play along the boards. Once teammates get open he can make a pass through the tightest of openings. Comtois has good size and is not afraid to work along the boards or in front of the net. Comtois is also a very good skater, with great first step quickness and excellent acceleration. As a 16-year-old rookie, he took on heavy responsibility, playing in all situations.
He also scored 60 points in 62 games this past season.

He had a decent rookie season in the NHL, scoring 20 points in 56 games, but struggled to keep up with the increased pace of the league.
He is most effective from mid-range, with a lethal wrist shot. He can skate and has good hands, but his small stature may hold him back from being more than a secondary scorer. He is an all-round rearguard with average offensive ability who carries his six-foot-four, 216-pound frame around very well.
He is reliable defensively, able to keep up with quick forwards and break up play with his long reach or lay the body. Should be a useful NHLer. He is a little undersized but is an above-average skater and a mobile defender.
Offensively, he is efficient, letting the play develop in front of him before finding an outlet. He has held his own so far in the NHL this season. He does the majority of his work in the offensive zone, beating defenders before dishing it off to a teammate.

By taking on more the 23 minutes of ice-time each night as a rookie, he was a top candidate for the Calder Trophy despite lacking in scoring that often drives conversation surrounding that award. He consistently eats 23 to 25 minutes of ice-time each night, puts up needed points, and just acts as a stalwart on the blue line that every team dreams of. Given everything, this was a great selection by Dallas, as they have one of the top young defensemen locked down to a reasonable deal through his prime years. Cale Makar — Colorado Avalanche To say that the 2016-17 season was an unmitigated disaster for the Colorado Avalanche would be a bit of an understatement. To start things off, then head coach Patrick Roy stepped down as head coach before the season even began, leaving the team little time to scramble and find a new skipper. Related: 2007 NHL Draft: 5 Forgotten Picks On the ice, the Avalanche finished dead last in the league , only mustering 48 points, which made them one of the worst teams of the cap era. Off the ice, they had a disgruntled star in Matt Duchene who wanted to be traded. Finally, despite having the best odds to win the Draft Lottery, they ended up falling all the way to fourth. However, while this looked like a stroke of bad luck that would set the franchise back years, it ended up becoming a centerpiece of their rapid rebuild to glory. This, of course, was due in no small part to their selection of Cale Makar. Needless to say, Cale Makar is a true superstar that will be a face of the NHL for years if not decades. However, he quickly went about proving any skeptics wrong by tearing up the NCAA and winning the 2019 Hobey Baker Award as the top player in college. Next, he joined the team for the 2019 postseason, where he played 10 games and posted six points. Following this strong start, he went on to win the 2020 Calder Trophy as the top rookie of the year and then went on to dominate the league in 2021-22 en route to winning the Norris Trophy. Finally, he capped everything off by claiming the 2022 Stanley Cup and winning the Conn Smythe Award. Needless to say, this pick will be a defining moment for the Avalanche over the next decade-plus. Somehow, by falling down the draft board, Colorado were able to still claim the best player of the 2022 Draft.
