Falling Damage in D&D 5e Explained

Diversity in the industry will shrink away, as projects from marginalized creators are effectively written out of the future. We expect Wizards of the Coast to attempt expensive and illegal lawsuits to enforce compliance with their new agreement. Our community deserves an open future if we want our favorite games to not only survive, but thrive!! If you are a creator, DontSign the new agreement. WotC has shown that they are the dragon on top of the hoard, willing to burn the thriving village if only to get a few more gold pieces. Owen K.

With no save? Dealing damage in these smaller chunks is just inherently better too, since you can always apply just enough to take out a target instead of having it survive at low health. Or be a Druid in Wild Shape badger form beneath the dirt. I could just kill them. Your Warlock has darkness up? You need to know what said beasts do, you need to actually have them allowed in your game, and you need to be able to reference them quickly, or else risk being incredibly wasteful with the real life time of several people. If your DM chooses the monsters, you need to be prepared for exponentially more possibilities.

Still though, if raw power is what you want, your DM is not the type to give you 8 quippers on land out of spite, and good table sense is what you have, then conjure animals is the spell to beat. Honorable mention to animate dead, which goes on an entirely different axis of low ease of use to give a roughly similar frame with less flexibility. Action cast, 60 ft range. So far up till now, all of our entries have been 3rd level spells. So how can small spells deal big damage? The answer, for dissonant whispers, comes not in raw power but in synergy. Oh, one of the Fighters is actually a Rogue?

Make that 16. From a 1st level spell slot?? There are some downright unreasonable returns here. But the greatest strength of dissonant whispers is leveraging of others, is also its greatest weakness.

She is a little confused.

You must pray to The Eye. The Eye is always right. Will you be able to escape The Eye, or become its slave? Need to scream or mock someone? Need to improve your verbal sparring skills?

Take on The Curmudgeon.

Depending on your DM, Phantasmal Force can completely take an enemy out of the fight and even get some damage in to boot. This spell also requires an Intelligence saving throw, which enemies are much more likely to fail. Hold Person. Hold Person has the slightly worse Wisdom saving throw, but it also comes with the stronger paralyzed condition.

And as far as Reddit is concerned , Hold Person is the superior option. It also deals a healthy 10. But as far as net party damage incoming and outgoing , it usually trails behind. Silence is right up there with Counterspell as premier anti-spellcaster spells. If it fails, the target is either blinded or deafened your choice for the duration.

At the end of each of its turns, it can repeat the saving throw.

However, you also have the following flaw: Silver Hypersensitivity. You have vulnerability to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage dealt by silvered weapons. While touching silver, you have disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks. On a failed save, the target becomes charmed until the end of its next turn. While charmed in this way, the target is incapacitated and has a speed of 0. The effect ends if the target takes any additional damage or if someone else uses an action to shake it out of its stupor. Psychic Convulsions When you deal psychic damage to a creature using a warlock spell or feature, you can force the target to make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the target drops whatever it is holding and is restrained until the start of your next turn. Before you make an ability check, you can spend 1 minute studying your book to see if it contains relevant stories. Roll 1d6. On a 6, you find ancient inspiration in the tome, and gain advantage on the check.

Once you gain this advantage, you must finish a long rest before you can gain it again. Scorching Radiance When you deal radiant damage to a creature using a warlock spell or feature, you ignore resistance to radiant damage unless the creature also has resistance or immunity to fire damage, and you treat vulnerability to fire damage as vulnerability to both damage types. Stupefying Toxin When you deal poison damage to a creature using a warlock spell or feature, you can force the target to make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the target has disadvantage on ability checks and attack rolls until the start of your next turn. While a creature is affected by this invocation and it is poisoned, it is also incapacitated. Talisman of Adoption Prerequisite: Progenitor Patron , Pact of the Talisman feature While wearing your talisman, a creature gains all the benefits of your Beast of the Curse and Cursed Shapechanger features, including the ability to transform. It must use your cursed beast and cannot choose its own. The wearer is not able to release a terrifying sound when it transforms. Twilight of the Soul When you deal necrotic damage to a creature using a warlock spell or feature, you ignore resistance to necrotic damage unless the creature has resistance or immunity to radiant damage, and you treat vulnerability to radiant damage as vulnerability to both types. Also, you do not need to provide any components when you cast the thaumaturgy spell, and you can cast it with a casting time of 1 bonus action. Vampiric Aspect Prerequisite: Progenitor Patron You have resistance to necrotic damage and you are an undead in addition to your normal creature type, but when a game effect targets you, you choose whether it treats you as undead or as your normal creature type. You can also choose one extra trait from your Cursed Shapechanger feature. You gain the benefit of that trait while in your cursed form. Finally, your Beast of the Curse feature treats bats, rats, and wolves as your chosen beasts, instead of your original choice. However, you also have the following flaws: Forbiddance. Harmed by Running Water. No Reflection. You do not appear in reflections. Stake to the Heart.

If a piercing weapon made of wood is driven into your heart while you are incapacitated, you are paralyzed until the stake is removed. Sunlight Hypersensitivity. While in sunlight, you have disadvantage on attack rolls and ability checks. Welcoming Light When you deal radiant damage to a creature using a warlock spell or feature, you can force the target to make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the target becomes charmed by you until the end of your next turn. While charmed in this way, the target regards you as a friendly acquaintance. Whisper the Dread Wind When you deal thunder damage to a creature using a warlock spell or feature, you can force the target to make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the target is frightened of you until the end of its next turn.

Your weapon attack counts as the touch required by the spell, and you do not need to know the spell to cast it in this way. Ambassador of the Depths Prerequisite: 5th level You can expend a warlock spell slot to cast the new dive spell. While the spell affects a target, that target also has darkvision that extends out to a range of 120 feet. You can choose to cast the spell without expending a spell slot or requiring material components. Cursed Regeneration Prerequisite: 5th level, Progenitor Patron You regain hit points equal to half your proficiency bonus once every hour, so long as this invocation is still functioning the entire time.

A creature prone to violence might attack you. Harbinger of the Pack Prerequisite: Progenitor Patron , Pact of the Chain feature In addition to Touch spells, you can cast spells that conjure, summon, or create another creature such as conjure animals through the familiar summoned by your Pact of the Chain feature as if the familiar was you. Heavenly Bolts When you deal lightning damage to a creature using a warlock spell or feature, you ignore resistance to lightning damage unless the creature also has resistance or immunity to radiant damage, and you treat vulnerability to radiant damage as vulnerability to both damage types. Hush of Winter When you deal cold damage to a creature using a warlock spell or feature, you can force the target to make a Wisdom saving throw. Lunar Transformation Prerequisite: Power of the Moon invocation When you see the full moon in the sky, you can use your reaction to use your Cursed Shapechanger feature, without releasing a terrifying sound. When you do so, you can choose to gain temporary hit points equal to your warlock level that last until you change form again. Maddening Poison When you deal poison damage to a creature using a warlock spell or feature, you ignore resistance to poison damage unless the creature has resistance or immunity to psychic damage, and you treat vulnerability to psychic damage as vulnerability to both types. Noxious Fumes When you deal acid damage to a creature using a warlock spell or feature, you can force the target to make a Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, the target is poisoned until the end of its next turn. In addition, you count as a shapechanger at all times. However, you also have the following flaw: Silver Hypersensitivity. Toggle Rules This role play tab is currently under construction and will not be accepting any new characters at the moment. Consider it invitation only for the time being. It will take place over the course of roughly six play sessions; live and in chat. More information will be placed as soon as possible. Keep in mind I will have pre-made characters that you can use. To save time, we will not be going over how to create characters. This can be done very easily, and for free; if you are interested just click here. Similarly, if a spell or magic item that is allowing a creature to fly is negated, the creature also falls. The exception is if the creature is able to hover. The idea is that a flying creature would have a better chance of surviving a fall than a non-flying one. The imp has a flying speed of 40 feet so we would calculate its falling damage as a 60 feet fall. When the imp hits the bottom of the pit, it will take 6d6 damage. But it has a better chance of surviving than if it were taking the full 10d6 from the fall! Massive Damage Depending on the size of the fall, it might be appropriate to use the Massive Damage rule. This optional rule triggers when a character takes half of their maximum hit points worth of damage or more from a single source. If they fail this saving throw, roll a d10 to determine what the effect is.

Right, like, okay. Eberron, Kryn, and other realms have escaped the cult influence for now. And so if you want to play the evil, you can play the evil character. If you want to play the mighty hero who wants to strike down Lolth on behalf of all the Drow, you can play that too. Random Yeah, but God help you if you dual-weild scimitars and get a black cat. Just saying. Tyler Everyone accidentally builds that character once.

Everyone does it. I want to use two weapons. Scimitars seem like a good choice. And I want to have the beast companion, and Panthers seem cool. Yeah, yep. Good old trust.

And then you as an individual have the right to choose as well. So having the core rulebooks be more setting-agnostic is really helpful. Removing some of those cultural indications, even potentially the alignment sections, says, like, this is the baseline for what defines a halfling. But personality and culture wise, like all bets are off. That is a setting detail. But I have my copy right here.

And then they could have that same alignment entry in every other setting book. But at this point, it seems unlikely. So, like, culture, culture, alignment, philosophy, those could be specific to a race in a setting. Removing those from the core rules kind of makes sense. I just… the way that they did this was clumsy. Randall When and then finally, I will say like having it per setting makes sense.

Now, does everybody need to go buy that setting book so that I understand what folks tend to be like? Random I would certainly hope that if a DM is going to base their campaign in a setting that they at least own the book, and will be happy to share that information. Like, Ah, yes, DM, I would like to play a halfling. And unfortunately, you know, maybe some DMs are not all about that. But realistically, I think that having it in the setting-specific books is fine.

If you acquire the playtest packet, please do not read through the premade adventure. It is what I am testing with and will cause unwanted metagaming; that will ruin the event for others.

Its Channel Divinity is okay, giving you basically basically guaranteed hits. The spell list is the final nail in the coffin. You gain a few Paladin spells and Hold Monster, but otherwise are stuck with Cleric spells. And nothing here really screams utility.

Not a bad one, but you have a few better options for hitting hard. Tempest Domain The Tempest Domain is a strong offensive spellcaster with access to a lot of offensive options in their Spells. They get great weapon and armor proficiency and can do very high damage with their Wrath of the Storm and Channel Divinity options. Without access to strong lightning spells like Lightning Bolt, the Tempest Domain slows significantly after level 12. Harness nature in the way it was intended and crush your foes. Image via Wizards of the Coast However, that powerful early game makes it really useful before level 12. Its base feature is Warding Flare, allowing you to impose disadvantage on attack rolls against you.

This eventually evolves to let you do this reaction on other targets. At level 17, it gains the ability to hinder saving throws against targets by spending an action. This turns fire or radiant damage spells into huge nukes. Its spell list is extremely potent with a lot of strong combat options—Heat Metal, Protection from Energy, Elemental Weapon, Wall of Fire—mixed with strong out-of-combat options—Identify, Fabricate, Creation. This Cleric is one of the few ways to get a pseudo-permanent plus-two to armor class from nothing except class features. By enchanting a non-magical set of armor, you can really be hard to kill—or make someone else hard to kill—in the early game. High AC, out-of-combat utility, and a strong spell list make the Forge Domain a very safe choice for your character.

Life Domain Listen, we love the Life Domain. And it offers quite a few abilities that no other Cleric can afford. You get Heavy Armor proficiency too, which is really nice. Your Disciple of Life ability makes in-combat healing viable before the Heal spell. With Disciple of Life, Cure Wounds gets a minimum boost of three, which can crest over the usefulness threshold.

Generally speaking, falling in 5e is assumed to be instant. With that said, a larger fall is an opportunity to really dial up the drama and tension at the table! If a character takes a 500 foot or more fall, give the party that round to react. So be careful! Not every fall can be walked off!

Additionally, a Barbarian that is currently using their Rage feature would have resistance to the damage from the fall. This is because the Barbarian gains resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage when they are raging. Meanwhile, spells like Levitate and Feather Fall can give you immunity to fall damage for the duration. Feather Fall slows the fall and lets you gently float to the ground while Levitate just might give you enough control to catch yourself and climb back up first!
