Paladin 5E — DnD class guide 2024

Extra Attack, Divine Smite and proficiency with two-handed weapons means Paladins are able to dish out damage quickly, consistently, and reliably. Support magic allows Paladins to heal and buff. Weaknesses: Reliance on weapons makes Paladins single-target fighters. Against a horde of enemies, casters are more suited to deal with the threat. Code of conduct. Paladins are required to be Lawful, which means you need to role play specific ideals. Limited skill utility. Paladins rely on other classes for Intelligence and Wisdom-based skill tests. They are proficient with heavy armor. You have no reason to have a high Dexterity score, so you can safely dump it.

Constitution: Paladins are arguably the most durable and self-sufficient class in the game. By keeping your Constitution nice and high, you ensure your survivability. Intelligence: You can safely dump this stat. Wisdom: Paladins are high-Charisma characters, and benefit from social skills. Charisma: Your Paladin abilities are all tied to Charisma. Scourge: The added durability is welcome. BugbearVGtM: Strength and reach make you powerful. Dragonborn: Strength and Constitution increases, energy resistance, and a breath weapon. Dwarf: The Constitution increase is welcome.

Elf: Elves are naturally lithe and dexterous, where Paladin looks for Brute Strength. Drow: Sunlight sensitivity is a huge drawback. EladrinMToF: Charisma, and the teleportation ability make a nice combo. High Elf: Not useful for Paladin. Wood Elf: Not useful for Paladin. Some innate spellcasting. Earth: Strength and Constitution, plus some additional abilities. Fire: Not useful for Paladin. Water: Not useful for Paladin.

Githyanki: Strength increase, but otherwise not useful. Githzerai: Not useful for Paladin. Gnome: Nothing Gnome has to offer is useful for Paladins. Forest: Not useful for Paladin. Rock: Not useful for Paladin. GoblinVGtM: A hilarious choice, your movement and Fury of the Small can be useful, but other races are generally better. Half-Elf: The best overall choice for Paladin, and a great choice for any class at all. Charisma, and your choice of two others but make them Strength and Constitution Standard: Two free skills! If you really want Booming Blade or Green Flame Blade, go with the feat so you at least get a 1st level spell out of it as well.

Half-Orc: Good stat increases, speed, and a skill. Stout: Extra durability in a small frame. Human: Humans are a very versatile race that work well in any class. Variant: You can still increase your main stats, and you have an option to pick up a feat at first level. OrcVGtM: Half-orc is strictly better. And the Eberron variant is the better use of the Orc race. TabaxiVGtM: feline agility functions even in heavy armor, so this race is actually viable for Paladin. Some of the subraces add even more. Standard: The basic Tiefling grants abilities that help out, but some other variants are better.

LevistusMToF: The spells are very useful, but this subrace causes you to miss out on key ability score buffs. ZarielMToF: Good ability score increases, spells, and extra smites. TritonVGtM:Perfect ability score spread, spellcasting, and resistance. Two skills, and disguise. Beasthide: Strength and Constitution, and a free skill. The temporary hit points you gain while shifting are a great perk as well. Longtooth: A less favorable ability score increase, but the extra attack granted by your shifting more than makes up for it. Swiftstride: Not useful for Paladin. Wildhunt: Not useful for Paladin.

Strength, a flexible ability score increase, natural armor, AC bonus, and the vigilance to keep watch over a sleeping party. Totally flexible, and lots of great options. Class Features Hit Dice: d10 hit points put you at the top of the hit point game. Weapon Proficiencies: All weapons. The best kind. Armor Proficiencies: All armor and shields. Tool Proficiencies: None. Lay On Hands: This is the most efficient healing ability in the game. Fighting Style: Paladins get a smaller list of fighting styles than Fighters do, but there are still solid options on the list.

The reroll does not apply to Smite damage dice, making it less useful. If you plan on using two-handed weapons, pick Defense instead to compensate for your lack of a shield. Protection: Tempting, but it only works with adjacent allies. Spellcasting: Paladin spellcasting is a nice mix of defensive buffs and healing. Your Smite spells are unique to your class, and powerful options for your swordsmanship.

Proficiencies Armor 5 — You have them all! So you have plenty of choices no matter what your primary stat is. Tools 1 — Who has time to learn how to use a tool when you have double period smite class? Saving Throws 3 — Wisdom is a nice save to have once you get into mid to late tier 2 and beyond, Charisma is incredibly rare but bad to fail. Whilst the saves here themselves are only a 3, the Paladin has plenty of tools to be great at saves regardless. Skills 2 — Not a good list at all really, Athletics is recommended but you can choose whatever you prefer for the second. It would have been nice to have seen Perception offered here, but alas. Lay on Hands 5 — Easily in contention for one of the best healing abilities in the game, the formula of 5 x Paladin level scales very nicely, whilst the flexibility of healing however much you want lets you deep heal or scrimp and save your points. The added utility of being able to cure a disease or remove the poisoned condition really allows the Paladin to act as a comprehensive healer with a single feature. This is also the only way to cure a disease without a magic item or other outside help at levels 1 and 2! Each Fighting Style will be evaluated individually further down. Spellcasting 4 — The Paladin is a half caster, which means their magic is more to support their primary role as a martial, rather than to act as a dedicated spellcaster. It is possible to build a Paladin who revolves around support, but spells play only part of this role. This feature is enhanced by your subclass, which gives additional spells prepared you may not have access to otherwise. Only rated as a 4 because of how variable its effectiveness is; if you have a high Charisma modifier, and get a good selection of spells from your subclass, this can easily be a 5. We will go through some recommended Paladin spells later in the guide. The additional damage die against undead and fiends makes the Paladin particularly effective in certain combats, and Divine Smite is one of the best burst damage abilities in the game. Divine Health 4 — A ribbon ability, but it comes at the same level as your subclass which makes it a nice bonus. This would be a 5 if it was an active ability or more universally applicable. Extra Attack 5 — The essential increase for every martial, well except the Rogue, this is especially nice for a Paladin as it gives more opportunities to smite either Divine or spell-based. Aura of Protection 5 — A superb feature, not only is this a significant defensive boost for yourself, but the whole party can benefit. Even with a lower Cha modifier, this can be the difference between your party failing some nasty saves which can lead to a TPK, or being victorious. The higher your Charisma the better this is, but even with a middling modifier this is still a great ability. Aura of Courage 4 — Frightened is a fairly common monster-imposed condition, so being immune to it, whilst making your party immune is very nice. Improved Divine Smite 5 — Not only a substantial damage increase, being able to do radiant damage every hit can come in handy against certain creatures, like vampires and zombies. Note: This does not apply to unarmed strikes unless you are making them with natural weapons. Cleansing Touch 2 — Whilst this ability could prove crucial in saving yourself of a party member, an action is a significant cost for most Paladins and there are far too many creatures who can impose effects independent of spellcasting. Aura Improvements 4 — Your auras will now likely cover your entire party for most combats, unless your party likes to really spread out of course. This is a significant defensive buff, however, at this level it feels a little lacking as the only feature. Some styles may be rated differently here than they were in the Fighter 5E guide, this is because the opportunity cost for a Paladin taking a Fighting Style is lower, as their available styles are far fewer. Dueling 5 — A great damage boost to one-handed weapons that scales with the number of attacks you get. Best for shield users and Dex based Paladins; better than using two hands with a longsword for Str based Paladins. Great Weapon Fighting 2 — If you reroll when you roll under the average damage for your chosen great weapon, this can be a damage boost. Keep in mind the attack may still hit, even with disadvantage. If you were already looking to play a shield-using Paladin, and have some party members willing to fight shoulder to shoulder, this can be a good tanking choice. TCoE Blessed Warrior 4 — If you want to play less of a martial Paladin, or are just looking for some more casting support, this is a great style. Stand-out choices include Guidance and Toll the Dead , of course the higher your Charisma the better for the latter. Blind Fighting 3 — This style does bring something to the Paladin they would have a hard time getting otherwise, blindsight, but its usefulness is pretty niche. This warrants a 3 because it is something your party can build around, such as making use of Darkness and Fog Cloud. Interception 4 — Unlike Protection, this will always help your ally. The additional Fighting Styles have already been covered above, and we will go through the remaining optional features in this section. Harness Divine Power 5 — This is a fantastic ability, making your Paladin more efficient and opening up your options. This is nice to have for some tables, and fairly redundant for others. The exact spread of stats you want depends on your build and personal priorities: some will want to max out both their attack stat and their Cha; others will be focused on being an effective martial and would be happy to leave their Cha lower; whilst some might have a middling attack stat and focus on Charisma to play a support role. You should consider your stats and priorities when you allocate your ability scores and choose a race at first level. Moreover, if you see your paladin as a warrior first you should ideally start with a 16 and advance it as quickly as you can. If you want to include feats from ASIs, try to get your Str to 18 first as this will help maintain your martial performance and consistency. However, if you choose to use light armor instead of medium armor, you will be more dependent on this stat for AC than your counterparts would be dependent on Str for theirs. Generally speaking, Dexadins gain a lot of benefits from their primary stat, such as high initiative and better Dex saves and skills, at the expense of one point lower AC and not using heavy or versatile weapons. Even if you focus on Str, having some degree of Dex is recommended for those benefits. Constitution 3 — This is a very nice stat to have as high as possible. The hit points will help with tanking and being in melee, and the higher chance to maintain concentration on your spells is very useful. However, being a MAD class means you likely cannot afford a particularly high score here, try and aim for no less than a 14, ideally a 16. Wisdom 3 — A good tertiary stat to have, if you think you may want to multiclass into a Wis requiring class then try to have at least a 14, otherwise whatever you can afford to put here is a good choice.

Now with all of that covered its time to take a knee, pick an oath and get into the colors of the Paladin. I am not talking about stats or spell lists but rather the motivations which drive your character, and in the case of the Paladin the oath is at the heart of what makes your character who they, even if the oath is broken. All of this factors so heavily into your characters design that we will be placing the oath up front and making it a key feature in building your character. So what common thread do we see across each paladin no matter the oath, well save for the oath breaker. Well that key, which will decide our core color, is that of dedication, discipline and moral absolution. The Paladin no matter what it chosen to focus on is a character who devotes its life to a cause, more so than many other classes, whereas the class in most cases is supplementary to the character it is the opposite for the Paladin. They are their cause and every action they take reflects the oath they have chosen. These key features tell us a lot about who the Paladin is and what its core color would be, a color who is also defined by these same descriptors. Pulling up the card we can that they have chosen White, and this is another case where I wholeheartedly agree. As I said each word used to describe the base of the Paladin describes core aspects of White. We saw White show up in our Cleric video and yet both represent different sides of the color. For the Cleric this color denotes service to a higher power, and whites proclivity to gravitate towards religion. In the case of the Paladin, it keys into ideas of strict morality, resolve, and justice. White is the color who often works in absolutes, seeing the worlds as black and white. They hold themselves and the world around them to a code of conduct, often through laws or judgment. White is shrewd in its outlook and enacts its ideals as the literal and only law. This can lead to both truly heroic and selfless characters or that of authoritarian and oppressive ones. I believe that the Paladin can be built in both ways, even through oaths which are outwardly facing as good. This absolute mindset and devoted nature is why White matches so well with the Paladin. To start off I want to take our core color and add in Red to see what sort of Paladin is bread from these colors influences. Coloring their view of the world around them, and vengeance can seem like the only outlet for such emotions. Not just vengeance on those who did them wrong, but against all who act with hate towards others. It is an act of violence against those who do wrong to the weak and judgment handed out is this characters only recourse.

Spirit Guardians a strong effect, but useless on ranged foes unless you spend your time chasing them around. Guardian of Faith is one of the best area control options available to you. Geas is usually less useful than killing something outright, but plays into your good-alignment sensibilities, and grants you some depth and could ultimately add a fun twist to the plot. Champion Challenge: Taunt effects are rare in 5e, and this one hits a wide area. Turn the Tide: A small amount of AoE healing is great in combination with your Lay on Hands ability, giving you even more utility as a support character. Divine Allegiance: Another way to redirect damage to yourself, giving your healing a single target. Exalted Champion: Unlike most other Paladin Oath capstone abilities, this one lasts for 1 hour instead of 1 minute. While less overtly powerful offensively, you gain a great defensive buff that extends to your allies, keeping everyone in it until the end, while making your whole team exceptionally difficult to kill. It provides you all the skillsof a great athlete and allows you to excel in combat. This Oath emphasizes your physical attributes while downplaying your spellcasting and diplomatic skills. Peerless Athlete: Activating this as a bonus action is a huge asset, you can pop it before trying to make a shove against an enemy. Inspiring Smite: Healing on demand for yourself and others. The radius increase at 18th level is nice, but again, too little too late. Glorious Defense: This is a really solid defensive ability. Use a reach weapon, profit. The fact that it only lasts for one minute means you need to use it wisely. Oath of Vengeance This Paladin build is the most offensive, attack-focused style of play, and will maximize the damage you deal while leaving healing and support primarily to the Cleric. It does well in tandem with another melee character to grans flanking bonuses, or a battlefield control caster to funnel enemies towards the pointy end. Dimension Door is just a longer- range Misty Step. Scrying is situational. Channel Divinity: One bad option and one perfect option make your choice on which to use easy. This is the bad option. Vow of Enmity: Here we go! Starting a boss fight? You have advantage against him. Relentless Avenger: Slower enemies will have a hard time getting away from you. Consider taking Polearm Master to further increase your threat radius and keep chasing them down. Soul of Vengeance: An extra attack each round against your target of Vow of Enmity greatly increases your damage output. Avenging Angel: Flight for an hour a day is pretty rad. The fear aura will hold lesser foes at bay while you take on the big bad, preventing you from being swarmed. All the abilities are great, but only apply in certain situations. If your campaign setting calls for it, this is one of the strongest paladin subclasses. However, in a vacuum when compared to the others, it underperforms. Oath Spells: A wide variety of spells that are mostly situational or overlap with other party roles. Ahead of a fight with casters, this is a solid buff, but otherwise it wastes an action you would otherwise use smiting. Abjure the Extraplanar: Situational. Aura of the Sentinel: An initiative boost for entering combat in tight formation. Vigilant Rebuke: Situational. Good against some casters. This Sacred Oath is more important for villainous archetypes than the others and gives an evil-aligned campaign a solid tank option. Oathbreaker paladins are free to pursue dark goals, or accompany some more roguish characters, such as a party of warlocks, bards, and rogues, on adventures. Oath Spells: Some of the options are bad and will never be used, but there are a few gems on this list. Go from being outnumbered to an overwhelming force in the blink of an eye. As long as you have the materials prepared ahead of time, your reinforcements can arrive when you most need them. Use it to animate a dead body to kill enemies and animate them tomorrow for a never-ending cycle. Confusion is unreliable compared to other single-target enchantment spells like Hold Person, given the randomness of its effect. Touch a target in a crowd and watch them deteriorate before confronting them for the kill. Dominate Person is a powerful way to temporarily gain an extra party member. Control Undead is on theme, but less relevant. Control Undead: Rather than turning undead, you can redirect them. This only works on minor threats, however, as any serious undead threat is going to be too powerful for you to control. Putting a swath of creatures into a frightened panic in your presence allows your allies to mop them up relatively easily. The damage bonus will stack considerably. Supernatural Resistance: Resistance to nonmagical damage makes you very difficult to kill when facing down minor enemies. Dread Lord: This ability does a ton of damage. Using it in conjunction with your channel divinity will allow you to chase enemies down and cause psychic damage to them, get an extra attack, and also take your normal attack. Animal Handling: Nature paladins and those who engage in mounted combat should grab this skill when available. Arcana: Divine casters usually take Religion over Arcana. Athletics: Strength is one of your main stats. Deception: Paladins are straight-talking Lawful Good guys, but they do have Charisma as a main stat… History: Not terribly important Insight: The one Wisdom skill you should concern yourself with. Intimidation: Another great Charisma skill for you. Investigation: Not your strong suit. Perception: Spot enemies sneaking up on you. Performance: Not your job. Persuasion: This is your most important skill. Sweet talk your way out of or into anywhere. Stealth: Not another Dexterity skill… Survival: Nature paladins only. Backgrounds Acolyte: Thematically this might make sense, as you get two skills off the paladin skill list, but neither are very useful given your ability score priorities. Versatile, but not ideal.

On a Mission from God – D&D 5E Paladin Optimisation Guide

The additional damage die against undead and fiends makes the Paladin particularly effective in certain combats, and Divine Smite is one of the best burst damage abilities in the game. Divine Health 4 — A ribbon ability, but it comes at the same level as your subclass which makes it a nice bonus. This would be a 5 if it was an active ability or more universally applicable. Extra Attack 5 — The essential increase for every martial, well except the Rogue, this is especially nice for a Paladin as it gives more opportunities to smite either Divine or spell-based.

Charisma 5 — Cha is a great stat to have, it ties to many of your class features and will make you a more effective Paladin. Even if you dump it to 8, a lot of abilities have a minimum of one use clause in them and other key features like Divine Smite and Lay on Hands have no interaction with Cha at all.

I recommend putting at least a 16 here, but you are by no means a bad Paladin if you decide otherwise. On the other hand, I would say Paladins are one of the more heavily affected classes in terms of role play, with the Oaths and the tenets that they present acting as a strong base to ground your character in, should you choose to do so. In our Paladin DnD 5E guide, we suggest that unless there is a particular spell or CD that is important for your build or really interests you, I would recommend choosing an Oath which resonates most with your character.

There is an additional Oath option, the Oathbreaker, which will not be covered here as it is a DM-facing subclass, primarily intended for NPCs. Channel Divinity options will be denoted by [CD]. Devotion The more stereotypical of the Paladin Oaths , Devotion is driven by justice, virtue, and order, in true knight in shining armor fashion.

Their abilities and spells are geared towards fighting the stereotypical enemy of Paladins: fiends, undead, and aberrations but they are also effective against other foes. In practice, losing your first action of a fight is a very steep cost. This gets a 3 for helping you overcome resistance or immunity to non-magical BPS, and the potential it has in longer combats.

Aura of Devotion 4 — Situational, but the amount of charmed-based effects on monsters is surprisingly large. This is worthy of a 4 as it completely shuts down the dangerous aspect of some creatures, and saves the party from the Barbarian being controlled by a spell like Dominate Monster… again. Purity of Spirit 4 — A very powerful passive benefit, Protection from Evil and Good covers a large number of creature types, making this relevant in a lot of situations.

Holy Nimbus 3 — This capstone is okay, but nothing special, primarily because of the action cost with so little in return. Additionally, saves against spells cast by fiends and undead are very niche, not protecting you from their non-spell abilities is disappointing.

On one such a mission, after purging a village which had grown infected by the undead they no longer believed in their mission and fell into darkness. Casting off their oath and last bit of humanity. I think a character like this can be tricky to play as it requires utilizing accumulated trauma as a mechanism for your characters decisions, but if you are up for the challenge then there is some amazing role-playing moments you can conjure up. In a rare case for our supplementary character designs I went with a mono color and one that opposes our core color. This choice was very deliberate. With White being a color of collective responsibility and justice, while Black is instead the color of individualism and moral relativism.

Where White places its purpose into the hands of a higher ideal, Black places its purpose solely with itself and its own desires. So in this way they shed their oath which bound them to a higher ideal, an ideal they found to be a lie and in this way cast their trust completely into their own hands. Now of course the rejection came with a steep price, they now push back fully against everything that their previous oath stood for and have become something of a villain themselves. CONCLUSION Now that we have built a few characters lets discuss each of the colors and how they can be used in relation to the paladin, that way you can mix and match to create your own. Ah yes that thing I told you to abandon in place of the color pie, well it does have its uses and I think I can illustrate something by doing so. At the heart of every Paladin is the core alignment of Lawful, something you could hardly escape, because in many ways an oath is a law you have set to be the focus of your life. Now of all of the colors there is one who applies to lawful the most, and that would be white. So just in the same way you would make your Paladin almost always lawful with some combination of good, neutral, or evil its the same with White.

Place White at the heart of your paladin and then add colors on top of it to drive its motivation further. Speaking of other colors what about the one color missing in all of the examples so far, Blue. In the case of the Blue paladin we would be talking about a more logical view of Justice rather than one based in morality. Its a logical path to a better world, something we talk about when discussing what values Blue and White share. Then we have Black. This color often will reject an oath in that an oath to uphold the ideals of someone else goes against Blacks wish to focus on ones own needs, it can have trouble doing things for others unless they truly believe in it themselves. In another way Black can be used to add a layer of ruthlessness to a Paladin who does follow an oath and can have dire consequences, as their actions would be total and unwavering. The next color is one I could see you using pretty often for the Paladin and that is Red, as Red adds a level of fanaticism to any color it is paired with.

The oath becomes more than the sum of its parts, it becomes a total identity in the presence of Red.

Paladin 5e Class Guide for Dungeons and Dragons

The key changes to the Paladin in this playtest are primarily reworks and changes to existing material, including those found in previous Unearthed Arcana materials.

Oath of Redemption. Small villages and townships on the fringes of the nation have been under attack or besieged by supernatural events. Tier 3 Paladins Tier 3 paladins are most likely to be encountered by PCs from levels 11 to 16, although you may insert them earlier as a potential patron or mentor figure. Unless your setting has uniquely powerful NPCs, tier 3 paladins should be very rare. Or perhaps they live a more lowkey existence on the fringes of society, battling planar threats before they become widely known.

Add the 15th level oath feature from a paladin subclass. An ancient forest is dying and no one is quite sure why. The reclusive guardian of the forest seeks aid in searching the area for the cause. Oath of the Ancients.

A once honorable paladin sold out his order in exchange for money or power. He must be brought to justice, or convinced to atone for his mistakes. Tier 4 Paladins Tier 4 paladins are most likely to be encountered by PCs from levels 17 to 20, although you may insert them earlier as a potential patron or mentor figure. A tier 4 paladin is comparable in many respects to a level 20 adventurer, there may only be one such figure in your entire setting.

Play-style: A stark contrast from the paladin of conquest, you enjoy the diplomacy and interrogation of others. To you, violence and physical confrontation means failure. However, if you do need to defend your friends, you want to see yourself as the equal and opposing force to the enemy.

People are just obstacles to be dismissed from your path of dominance. Game Mechanics: Additional spells have a heavy focus on attacking and animating the dead. They can emit an aura of fear to turn opponents.

At later levels, the oathbreaker can deal additional melee damage, granting this bonus to their allies ie. At higher levels, the oathbreaker gains resistance to some forms of damage and, within a powerful aura, can cause a growing darkness to surround them and harm those that dare to try and attack. Play-style: Although intended as a villainous class to use the undead to attack enemies, a player may be able to focus more on the element of utilizing the dead as allies in fighting for good.

In either case, you want to focus paladin spells on attacking, and to have a regiment of undead by your side. Alex Louise Armstrong Fullmetal Alchemist Oath of Glory MOT Theme: Glorious Paladins aim to add pages to the legends of themselves and their deities by performing extraordinary athletic feats, not only in combat, but in adventure too. They value a sound body to find a sound mind.

Game Mechanics: Use channel divinity to gain 10 minutes of advantageous athletics and acrobatics, while also able to carry, push, and drag twice as much weight as normal. Jumping distances also increase by 10 ft during this period. Additionally, they are able to use divinity to distribute temporary hit points to allies within 30ft once they deal damage to a creature.

At mid levels, you emanate an aura that increases the speed of you and any allies nearby. At the higher levels, you can use your reaction to add to nearby allies AC if they are being attacked.

What I mean is that there are those are acted upon by ruthless external forces who are unable to stand up to such aggressors and the oath of vengeance paladin is there to fill in that role, by being that act of recourse for those unable to do so, placing fear in the heart of those who bring fear to others. In the case of our White Red character they had felt the hand of an evil force mar their view of the world and vowed that such horrific actions should never go unpunished. They found that the sword, shield and divine magic were tools they could use to enact vengeance on the behalf of others, for those who could not stand up for themselves. They now see themselves as Judge Jury and executioner. This outlook and life have hardened them with an unquenchable resolve. You see a traumatic experiences at a young age can harden a person and such is the case of this version of the Paladin. One which defines the characters life thereafter. White in this regard is the expression of Judgment and Justice, justice on the behalf of others to weak to stand against the darkness of the world. The issue is that Justice is blind, and can be dished out when it is potentially not appropriate.

This can add a lot of nuance to your character when playing them. Red in this context is the anger which is bread our character and their chosen oath. There is an rage which is inherent in vengeance whether it is justified or not, and this can mare our paladins view of the world. When we create our characters we want them to be complex and faults such as these can bread complexity and lead to moments that some Paladin role-players might be afraid to tread and yet by using the colors present their hand is forced. As you can already see the Paladin can be dynamic in its motivations when we take a look at what could lead to such oaths and how those could be played out in your campaigns.

At tier 2, these paladins could be leaders of religious groups in notable cities, members of secret organizations, or serve as protectors to the nobility and other prominent members of society. Add the 7th level oath feature from a paladin subclass.

Two feuding kingdoms or factions seem poised for war. In an effort to prevent the massive bloodshed that would follow, a paladin recruits the party to act as diplomats and peacemakers. Oath of Redemption. Small villages and townships on the fringes of the nation have been under attack or besieged by supernatural events. Create a better PALADIN using the Color Pie System for your next DnD Campaign. This Guide is designed to help with designing more robust backstories and motivations for your Paladin. A paladin follows a strict code of discipline and devotion. While the archetypal paladin is lawful good, protecting the innocent and the weak, paladins in 5e can be much more varied than this (though certainly do steer towards being protectors). Now she is searching for a new place to call home and have a chance to rebuild her life. He was like a lion or tiger, and he had a fearless sense of adventure. When he was old and frail, he taught his daughter everything he knew about fighting and hunting, hoping she would continue the family legacy after he passed away. She chose a different path, however, joining the clerics in Yorebridge. Zaela trained under the Lord Marshall of the Grabisco Army. She learned at an early age that her people halflings were not as popular as humans or elves. She trained hard and became a powerful cleric-warrior, and was the only halfling to become a Lord Marshall. Zaela eventually took over the role as leader of the clerics in Yorebridge and the surrounding area.

With the attack by the dragon, Gulo, Zaela has been called upon once again to protect her people. The Green Dragon Gulo was born many years ago. With a head as big as a horse, and a huge wingspan, he was the biggest dragon in the land. He was very cunning and powerful. People feared him. He liked to drink the blood of humans and halflings, and enjoyed destroying small farms and villages in the countryside. He was not above eating a dog or chicken, either.

His size was intimidating, and he was tough to defeat! The elves were the first to come up with a plan to defeat the dragon Gulo. They called on a group of human warriors called the Red Dragons. Zaela, serving as a Lord Marshall, led the army into battle with Gulo. That battle was the bloodiest and most difficult battle Zaela had ever been involved in. Gulo had been ready for them, however. The attack lasted for days with both sides watching their comrades fall by their side.

However, at last the leaders of the Red Dragon forces thought they had figured out a plan that would work. They used a magic potion that could make them invisible, but this meant they would not be able to see each other or Gulo in order for it to work. That was accomplished by using ropes. As they prepared their attack, two leaders of the Red Dragons covered themselves with shields painted with pictures to see each other by reflection. Available as an eBook or in a classic print format. He got so angry that he breathed fire at them.

Constitution, as usual, is extremely important for survival. At level 3 and further, levels should be put in Warlock, taking melee option abilities as you level. Warlocks regain all spell slots during a short rest. The strategy: As often as possible, utilize Divine Smite on hits to increase melee power - which can be then replenished during a short rest. The weakness: Although few monsters are resistant to radiant, this build focuses on radiant damage. Explore alternative damage sources for backup.

Advantage on your save to maintain Concentration is a solid bonus for Paladins since many very effective buffs require Concentration, but I would consider Resilient before you consider this. If you can pick up a Cantrip like Booming Blade or Word of Radiance, this becomes considerably more interesting. Paladin Weapons This section covers weapons which specifically appeal to the Paladin. For more advice on choosing weapons, including those not addressed here, see our Practical Guide to Weapons. Get a polearm. Works best when combined with Polearm Master and Sentinel. Javelin: Likely your go-to ranged option. Rapier: Go-to option for finesse builds. Paladin Armor Chain Mail: Starting armor. Studded Leather: Armor for finesse builds. For more on multiclassing, see our Practical Guide to Multiclassing. If you do go this route, consider starting with a level of fighter to get proficiency in Constitution saving throws. It will advance your spellcasting twice as fast as Paladin levels, and a single level gets you cantrips and access to the 1st-level abilities of a sorcerous origin. Warlock: A common, popular, and effective option. Though other patrons have plenty to offer, Hexblade is simply too good to pass up. First, the sword glows almost as brightly as a torch, allowing you to see in dark places without devoting a hand to a torch and without asking your allies to cast light or something. Second, and more important, it allows you to overcome damage resistance to non-magic attacks. Resistances like this are common as you gain levels, and the Moon-Touched Sword is an inexpensive way to overcome them until a better weapon comes along. The actual magic stuff is amusing, but probably not important. Most melee fighters will prefer a Moon-Touched Sword, but for polearm masters this is your best bet at this rarity. Uncommon Magic Items Adamantine Armor DMG : Curiously, due to the insanely high price of full plate and the inconsistent price of magic items, adamantine full plate can often be less expensive than regular full plate. Boomerang Shield BoMT : An interesting solution to range weaponry, providing the benefits of a returning weapon while also providing the benefit of a shield.

Great Weapon Fighting: For when you want two hands on your weapon. As written this is incredible because the re-roll will apply to Divine Smite damage. Protection: Another good style for you shield users. Uses your reaction to impose disadvantage, if your party looks to you for protection this fits that role. Worthwhile if you see yourself climbing rigging and swimming in the oceans. Like Druids this gives them amazing day-to-day versatility. A holy symbol is required as a focus, which can be worn as an amulet or embossed on your shield. Divine Smite: The cornerstone of your burst damage ability. This one can especially become devastating on a critical hit, in which case the damage dice from this are doubled. Another key thing to remember about this is that it uses no action whatsoever, which means you can use it multiple times per round if you have additional attacks, can use it on the same turn you cast a bonus action spell including stacking this on top of a smite spell! NOTE: The 5d8 cap means the maximum damage from this uses a 4th-level spell slot, so you get no benefit from blowing a 5th-level slot. This may need to be errata-ed to a 6d8 cap. Divine Health 3rd Level : Immune to disease. Great when it comes up. The archetype you choose grants you features at 3rd level and again at 7th, 15th, and 20th level. Only the Fighter gets more of these. Max out your primary stats and then take a some feats. Aura of Protection 6th Level : Arguably the signature of the Paladin class, where you add your CHA modifier to all of your saving throws. And if allies are within 10 feet, they get that benefit, too. Aura of Courage 10th Level : Frightened can be quite nasty for a melee combatant, which you are, because it not only invokes disadvantage on all attack rolls and ability checks, but it also prevents you from moving towards the source of the frightening. Improved Divine Smite 11th Level : Bonus radiant damage every time you hit at no cost. Cleansing Touch 14th Level : Negate a hostile spell on yourself or an ally with your action, with CHA-mod uses per day. Pretty neat ability, if not quite a flat-out game changer. Aura Improvements 18th Level : All those lovely Auras you get Protection, Courage, anything from your Oath expand from 10 feet to 30 feet. Strength is the best for a two-handed attacker, both are viable for dual wielding and sword-and-board fighting styles. Dex: Dexterity is obviously preferable for finese weapons. Con: Another top tier stat. Hit points are just too important to let slide. Paladins are melee combatants, and more hit points lets them stay in combat for longer and recover more HP with hit dice. If you plan on casting Concentration spells in the middle of combat, you want a decent score here to maintain them when taking damage. It helps that the Paladin is proficient in Wisdom saves. Boost Charisma instead and let Aura of Protection take care of the rest. Defensive bonuses are also useful early though some options may be less effective later. Enlarge gives you advantage on STR checks and saves, plus an extra d4 damage on each attack. They get Darkvision, advantage against charm and immunity to sleep. Boosted darkvision and Faerie Fire can help in an ongoing underground campaign, and the sunlight sensitivity hurts if you go outside. Maybe you can wear a big fancy hat like Jarlaxxle. The new Fey Step also has a side effect depending on what season you are, which you can change any day you want. Note that Winter is a frightening effect and is thus valuable for Conquest. Using a bonus action you can do a short range teleport that gives you resistance to all damage. A solid defensive option. Relying on at least 3 stats makes this a decent idea but not an incredible one. Get a head start on your character concept with a feat! The small size but without the benefits of Lucky or the Dex Bonus. Many Paladins will want to consider this, there are even more sub-race options on Half-Elf now similar to the Elf subraces. Perception is a solid choice in any campaign and the other one is up to you. All the positives with none of the downsides. Good deal. Thematically a Fiend Paladin who is resistant to fire like a Blackguard just sounds badass. The Variant Tieflings are a mixed bag.. Hellish Rebuke and Darkness give you some ranged options and utility. Charm person and Entrall based on your Charisma spellcasting modifier are also solid options if used correctly. Hellfire : Replacing the hellish rebuke with burning hands helps your ability to handle some hordes, not a huge change though. Winged: Instead of extra spells you get to fly around when not wearing heavy armour. Darkvision, resistance to necrotic and radiant damage, free Light cantrip and a long-rest recharge, scaled-back version of Lay on Hands that means you can conserve some of your actual Lay on Hands. The rest of the abilities are a bit hap-hazard for a Paladin. A big strong Goliath is similar to a Half-Orc where you get Athletics for free instead of Intimidation. Tabaxi get Darkvision, extra movement, built in weapons, and free proficiency in Stealth and Perception.
