Due to this canonical disagreement it is disputed which church has been the legitimate successor to the Russian Orthodox Church that had existed before 1925. In 1930, after taking part in a prayer service in London in supplication for Christians suffering under the Soviets, Evlogy was removed from office by Sergius and replaced. This is considered by some as violation of the Apostolic canon , as no church hierarch could be consecrated by secular authorities. The Moscow Theological Academy Seminary , which had been closed since 1918, was re-opened. In December 2017, the Security Service of Ukraine lifted classified top secret status of documents revealing that the NKVD of the USSR and its units were engaged in the selection of candidates for participation in the 1945 Local Council from the representatives of the clergy and the laity.
NKVD demanded "to outline persons who have religious authority among the clergy and believers, and at the same time checked for civic or patriotic work". In the letter sent in September 1944, it was emphasized: "It is important to ensure that the number of nominated candidates is dominated by the agents of the NKBD, capable of holding the line that we need at the Council".

A second round of repression, harassment and church closures took place between 1959 and 1964 when Nikita Khrushchev was in office. Иеромонах Антоний взялся за дело со всей присущей ему энергией и спустя немного времени начал проповедовать по-английски, к православию стали проявлять интерес и представители других конфессий.
В результате миссионерской работы о. Антония количество православных приходов в Англии выросло настолько, что было принято решение образовать на Британских островах отдельную епархию Московского Патриархата. Где в Англии Сурож?
Английская православная епархия называется «Сурожская», хотя Сурож — это древнее название крымского города Судак. В этом случае также не последнюю роль сыграла дипломатичность владыки Антония. Когда ему дали титул епископа Лондонского, он подумал, что это может ему создать проблемы во взаимоотношениях с англиканами, у которых уже имелся свой Лондонский епископ.
И тогда было решено назвать новую зарубежную епархию именем существовавшей в древности, но не действующей епархии. В Русской Церкви обычно принято выбирать из старых епархий, образованных в Крыму еще во времена Византии. Так, например, епархия, действующая на территории Франции и Италии называется «Корсунская».
А в Англии — стала Сурожская. Как подлинный миссионер, митрополит Антоний старался сделать так, чтобы в храме могли молиться православные из разных стран. И сегодня во многих соборах Англии православная Литургия служится на нескольких языках: в основном на английском, но какие-то молитвы поются по-славянски, а какие-то по-гречески.
Нет и православного «дресс-кода»: кто-то из женщин повязывает платок, кто-то нет. И если женщина зайдет в храм в брюках, и даже в шортах, никто не сделает ей замечания. По инициативе владыки во многих храмах открылись детские воскресные школы, а летом приходских детей обязательно вывозили на природу, в летний лагерь.
Опыт совместного бытия в лагере был бесценным. Ведь далеко не всех детей еженедельно водили в храм — нередко до ближайшего православного храма надо было ехать больше 100 км. Летний лагерь стал доброй традицией.
А уж как англичане относятся к своим традициям, хорошо известно: и сейчас в лагере работают те, кто ездил туда в детстве, а те, кто приезжает отдыхать, наслышаны о лагере от своих пап и мам. В течение нескольких десятилетий лагерь старались проводить при любом стечении обстоятельств. А складывались они по-разному.
У лагеря никогда не было своего собственного места. В этом смысле Англия не Россия — тут где попало палатки не разобьешь. Приходилось арендовать территорию.
Пользовались и чьей-то благотворительностью, которая по воле случая вдруг заканчивалась, и надо было срочно искать новые варианты размещения.
