The Canucks seemingly reached and selected forward Elias Pettersson, who divided the experts. Some havd him ranked in the top ten while others saw him as a late-first rounder at best.
Once Pettersson took the ice for the Canucks, he left any of his doubters behind. He set the standard throughout his rookie season in 2018-19, posting 28 goals and 66 points en route to winning the Calder Trophy despite only playing in 71 games. Elias Pettersson has brought superstar offensive talent to the Vancouver Canucks. So, while this pick seemed risky in the moment, it ended up being an absolute hit for the Canucks. Cody Glass — Vegas Golden Knights As the talk of the town, the hockey world waited with bated breath as the Golden Knights made their first pick as a franchise. With this selection, the Golden Knights took forward Cody Glass , a big-bodied, two-way threat that many believed would become the top-line centerpiece for the fledgling franchise. Following his selection in 2017-18, he put up 102 points in 64 games for the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League, further cementing him as a premier NHL prospect. Glass struggled with injuries and inconsistency to start his professional career, as he only played 41 games in AHL and NHL in 2019-20, scoring just 14 points.
He followed that up with another disappointing split season for Vegas, leading to his trade during the 2021 offseason to the Nashville Predators.

He scans the zone from the point and makes little feints before finding his target.
He is every bit as good a skater as Makar and his zone entry and exit numbers are also elite. Heiskanen is significantly better defensively, playing 25-plus minutes in both of his playoff campaigns. He is incredibly efficient at stunting offense with his body and stick. The Stars will be content having picked Heiskanen third. He is a terrific playmaker — he ranked 10th in assists-per-60 last season — and his tireless work ethic makes him difficult to play against.
He never stops competing, winning pucks and generating chances for his teammates. He has shown some flair this season, too. Passing by Robert Thomas has been so nice this season pic. He has an elusive release and picks corners with ease. He should feast on weak matchups as a second-line center this year.
In his final year of junior, he carried the Guelph Storm to the Memorial Cup with 42 points in 24 playoff games. In the NHL, he has continued to produce at an impressive rate and has shown he can run a powerplay. Some have given up on him, but if he remains healthy he can still reach his potential. His frame means he can win pick battles and maintain possession, and his quick hands and creativity mean he can create chances. He is just as good as a setup man or a finisher.
If he can round out his game and start to make the simple plays more consistently, he may end up higher on this list. However, the players above him have been more effective thus far. Standing at six-foot-three, 200 pounds, he is most effective below the hash marks where he can dictate play with his size, shot and vision.
It may take another season or two but he has a very bright future. Foote should be just about ready to help Tampa Bay in a depth role. Liljegren will be covered shortly. Oettinger looks like the future No.
Vaakanainen might be an NHL regular but it will almost certainly be in a depth role. Norris has broken out since leaving the San Jose organization. He was viewed by most as a mid second-rounder. Joseph was viewed as a safe, dependable defender with limited upside on draft day and it would be shocking to see him even reach that level at this point. He played three seasons at the University of Denver and signed with Chicago this spring. He has a chance to make an immediate impact in The Windy City. His NHL debut should come in 2020-21.

His skating needs to come along though, particularly his footwork and overall agility. But the bigger concern is how badly he wants it - as his work ethic and defensive play regressed to alarming levels over the second half. His smooth skating, subtle skills, and innate feel for the game were on full display throughout. Vaakanainen could turn out to be one of the best players from this draft. Expect the Finns to be high profile at this draft - as they could place up to seven players in the opening round plus another half dozen in the second.
The biggest fallers are Klim Kostin and Isaac Ratcliffe who dropped nine spots each, while Eric Rasmussen dropped six. He is a dynamic offensive player, but an underrated defensive player as well. Arguably the mos dynamic offensive player in the draft.

He can make offensive plays rushing the puck, or pinching in at the blueline; but still has the speed to get back defensively. Liljegren has the poise and smarts to quarterback a power play. He has excellent vision, and makes good passes to set things up at the line. He can also make the long breakout pass to hit a teammate streaking through the neutral zone. He uses it to get in on the fore check and cause problems for defenders. He uses his size to shield the puck and maintain possession in the cycle game, and uses his powerful stride to fight through checks and drive the net.
Vilardi has a very long reach and excellent puck handling ability. He uses these assets to extend plays and wait for teammates to get open, before hitting them with a pass. Vilardi is constantly moving and getting involved in the play. He is extremely gritty and involved in battles along the boards, and in front of the net. The power forward prospect also has a very good wrist shot. With Windsor hosting the 2017 Memorial Cup , there will be plenty of opportunities to show off his skills to the scouts. He put up 17 goals and 38 points in 62 games last year.
He has an excellent array of shots, with good power and accuracy on his wrist shot, snap shot and slap shot. A sniper, Comtois has a very quick release that can handcuff opposing goaltenders. He also has excellent vision and passing skills. Comtois can extend plays by using his stick handling and puck protection to control the play along the boards. Once teammates get open he can make a pass through the tightest of openings. Comtois has good size and is not afraid to work along the boards or in front of the net. Comtois is also a very good skater, with great first step quickness and excellent acceleration.
As a 16-year-old rookie, he took on heavy responsibility, playing in all situations. He also scored 60 points in 62 games this past season. Tippett is extremely dangerous off the rush. He has excellent speed and acceleration. His ability to change speeds allows him to take defenders wide and drive to the front of the net, where he has the soft hands to finish in tight. If defenders back off to respect his speed, he can use his excellent wrist shot or snap shot and beat goalies with a quick release. Tippett could stand to work on his play making skills.
He can stand to slow things down and hold on to the puck just a little longer before rushing a play. Tippett had 15 goals and 20 points for Mississauga last season.
