The story is called Purple Hearts. Being on camera is probably the greatest lesson in beauty. When I first started, I only used eyeliner and a nude lipstick that washed me out. I remember walking my first carpet and I saw photos and I was like, "This is not working.
For instance, I know now that I love smoky eye shadow, being able to start small and build it up for bigger events. My lips have stayed pretty consistent. I had the pleasure of being able to develop my own shades with my Revlon family [Carson is an ambassador for the brand]. One of my other favorite products is not a product, but a good, old-school trick: hair spray on a brow brush. I love a specific lash: Ardell Demi Wispy.
All that Liz wanted to pursue was honesty and truth in every aspect of our story. From the military to diabetes to healthcare to immigration to the love story, we were striving for vulnerability and honesty and for our story and these characters to feel as real as possible. Where did you source inspiration from, and how did you throw yourself into the project from the music perspective?
I had the privilege that I had lived with this character, with this young woman, for four years before I had to bring her story to life through song. It was a beautiful experience with [songwriter Justin Tranter]. It was magical.
I had my notes pages on my phone filled with lyrics for weeks before we started writing. The title "Hate the Way" and a couple of those lyrics I had been thinking of because of so many instances with Cassie and Luke that were so real. I love being able to do that.
The production experience and the caliber of the original content is soaring through the roof. It seems much more geared to trying to make movies that also can compete on the awards scale.

And it kind of guided us for the rest of the soundtrack. And we knew that that was our song. It just really captured the soul, the tenderness of this moment, the vulnerability at this moment — and truly the heart of our story. Netflix I think we dedicated most of our time to making this relationship as real as possible. And you know, there were so many moments of conflict, but then also a lot of moments of levity and realness, and kind of sexiness and flirtiness that was always tied into their differing world views. We really just kind of surrendered to to Cassie and Luke. And no point is she like, fundamentally changed as a person. They see each other past their differences and realize that perhaps, perhaps we have more that connects us than divides us. I have to ask, were you bummed about being able to sing with Nicholas? But who knows? One day.
Well, before we wrap, I do want to get into the songwriting as well. So how do you kind of find that line? I mean, I was terrified. My mom can attest to that, I called her crying multiple times. It was like, who thought that I could do this? But believe it or not Andi, it was a very similar experience. Because, you know, when I write songs as Sofia, I dive into my heart to speak or sing my truths and in order to write songs for Cassie, and to bring her story to life, I had to dive into her heart. And I had been living with this person with this young woman for four years — with her story, with her thoughts, her fears, with their love story — in my heart.
And so I think in the process of writing the music, it helped me to become Cassie that much more. I drew from Cassie and from Luke in order to bring the songs to life and it was such a beautiful experience. We wrote the entire soundtrack, believe it or not, in one week. One week. I had most of the lyrics on my phone because that was, to me, exactly what Cassie and Luke felt. She hated how much she loved him, like, she did not want to love this man. And she has that tattooed on her forearm. It was the one that stole all of our hearts.
